Overview

Engineers at Electric Boat work collaboratively across departments and with our customer to develop innovative solutions for the United States Navy’s nuclear submarines. As an Intern, you'll be exposed to various engineering activities with the support of our senior staff. This program grants our trainees the opportunity to develop valuable skills and dive into cutting-edge projects such as leading the Columbia Class design and enhancing Virginia Class submarines. Every intern will be exposed to a wealth of knowledge in order to excel in the engineering domain.

 

This program requires a minimum commitment of 8 weeks during the Summer 2026 Season.

 

Participation in this program requires medical screening, passing a drug test, and potential DOD Investigation.

 

This is not a remote opportunity.

Facilities & Construction Support – Summer Internship

 

Job Description:

 

Facilities & Construction Support Directorates - Crane Maintenance, Test & Inspection are responsible for the inspection and maintenance of over 900 pieces of critical weight handling equipment used throughout both Quonset Point, RI and Groton, CT during the construction of nuclear submarines. Our mission is to provide better than world class service to our customers that use our equipment while meeting all industry standard requirements. We provide safe and reliable equipment under challenging situations to deliver the advantage to our customers in meeting their requirements.

 

Additional responsibilities include total life cycle support of all weight handling equipment including the hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical and electrical equipment used in lifting and handling with specific responsibility for all overhead cranes, forklifts, and personnel lifts.  Single point of contact for the resolution of technical problems, recommending design changes, vendor liaison including oversight and input of procedures and technical support to department repair and test personnel in order to support production operations at both sites.

 

Facilities & Construction Support Summer Interns you will be exposed to a myriad of challenges and opportunities and may be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Exposure to structural, mechanical and electrical design, installation and troubleshooting of weight handling equipment
  • Participation in Integrated Product Team (IPT) reviews for new equipment including vendor and Government support
  • Participation in challenging working groups during troubleshooting and maintenance issues with our weight handling equipment
  • Participation in design efforts and specification development for new equipment at both sites
  • Integrate with subject matter experts both engineers and trades personnel to grow your level of knowledge
  • Provide oversight to vendors who are assigned to conduct maintenance, repair and testing of critical weight handling equipment
  • Provide structural and load calculations to critical weight handling equipment
  • Learning to support hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical and electrical equipment used in lifting and handling with specific responsibility for all overhead cranes, forklifts, and personnel lifts
  • Review resolution of technical problems, recommending design changes, vendor liaison and input of procedures and technical support to department repair and test personnel in order to support production operations.
  • Use a strong systems background to initiate and coordinate any studies to improve equipment, operating methods, expand existing hardware utilization and development of any new hardware required.
