Summary
Graduation from high school or the equivalent and one year experience in painting or mechanical work; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience. Applicants within six months of meeting the education/experience requirement may be considered for trainee status.
A Valid Florida Driver License is required and a Motor Vehicle Record that meets the requirements of Alachua County policy #6-7; Motor Vehicle Records will be reviewed prior to employment. If, in the past 24-month period, the applicants Motor Vehicle Record has more than three (3) moving traffic infractions or three (3) or more at fault motor vehicle accidents (or combination of both and /or a conviction/pending charge for driving under the influence) or is in violation of any standard mandated by Federal or State Law or Regulation, the minimum qualifications are not met for the position.
Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen & physical examination and successful completion of all applicable background checks pre-hire and ongoing are required.

Examples of duties
This is skilled technical work requiring the application of techniques used in manufacture, installation and maintenance of traffic and street signs for the Alachua County Department of Public Works.
An employee assigned to this classification performs tasks requiring the use of advanced painting techniques such as fabrication of traffic signs and special zone markings.

Work is performed under the direction of a higher level supervisor and is reviewed through conferences, reports, and observation of results obtained.
Qualifications
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
This is an emergency essential classification. Upon declaration of a disaster and/or emergency, all employees in this classification are required to work.Exudes a positive customer service focus.

Serves as job foreman in the field.
Enforces use of safety devices.
Erects traffic signs and sign posts; repairs damaged signs and straightens bent posts; removes and refurbishes signs that are not legible.
Uses acetylene torch to cut sign posts for various applications.
Paints pavement markings and special zone markings with airless paint machines and hand roller accurately guiding machine over designated areas; carefully controls flow of paint.
Measures and marks street and curb areas to be painted, including parking stalls, bus stops, loading zones, stop bars and directional arrows; paints with hand brush and airless paint machine.
Fabricates traffic signs and street name signs, railroad crossings, and school zones. Applies sign faces to metals using squeeze roller applicator.
Performs routine and special traffic counts.
Stencils and marks County vehicles.
Participates in the maintenance of the sign and paint shop and keeps all materials, supplies, and equipment in good order.
Locates and installs street name signs on streets and highways to conform to 911/EMS location systems.
Drives a County and/or personal vehicle to perform required duties.
Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.

Skill in the use and operation of an applicator/roller, drawing square, T-square, post driver, airless paint machine, traffic counters, drill press, acetylene torch, and metal shears.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to work outdoors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
