Position summary:
The Academic Advisor for Business and Computer Science provides accurate information in the advising process including: course selection, graduation requirements, articulation, and transfer information while considering the prominence of student retention. The advisor demonstrates a good understanding of each Business and IT pathway and the necessary pre-requisites. The primary focus of the advisor will be to assist students with selection of course(s) for educational goal, course scheduling and degree audits to ensure progress towards student success and graduation. Retention efforts will include holistic advising, referral to appropriate institutional student supports, provide information regarding program of student interest, proper course sequence, and specific monitoring of progress of students who are not in college-level coursework. The new advisor will collaborate with the other advisor in the division and fellow advisor(s) that assist with advising of students in this division to focus efforts for student success for employment in industry and university transfer needs that encompasses both the Kilgore and Longview campuses.
Position responsibilities:
- Maintain privacy and student record security standards as set forth by the institution and Family
- Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
- Providing academic and career information to a diverse community college student population
- Participating in registration and student orientation
- Assisting students with the development and updating of an education plan
- Assisting with course selections
- Consulting with students about future education planning
- Maintaining student success by providing guidance to the student support services KC offers along with different Workforce career pathways offered
- Meeting with students through in-person, virtual, phone advising appointments, and various advising and registration events
- Keeping abreast of current education practices
- Providing information about transfer colleges and universities
- Working with appropriate resource persons to provide students with realistic information about courses
- Providing accurate realistic information on job opportunities within the industry
- Must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree
- Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills (email, phone, & in-person)
- Must provide good customer service and interact with students in a positive manner

- Have general skills in keyboarding and computer usage
- Have the ability to multitask
- Be well organized and thorough
- Be able to work well with little supervision
- Deal professionally and courteously with a diverse student and employee population
- This is a 12-month position

- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office and classroom environment.
- No or very limited physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
- No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
