Description
Ball Horticultural Company is seeking a customer-centric candidate to lead and supervise the Premier Lab Plug Testing and Quality Control departments located at company headquarters in West Chicago, IL. Ball is the largest flower seed breeder/producer and distributor in the world, providing outstanding products, best-in-class customer service, and reliable supply to professional growers around the globe.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Lead and work with Plug Testing and Quality Control team of 6-7 employees to deliver best-in-class service.
- Be responsible for seed testing scheduling using computer system.
- Prepare soil flats and sow seed using machinery or by hand for germination testing.
- Maintain growth and mist chambers to provide the optimal growing environment for our testing processes.
- Utilize technology systems and hand-counts for germination analysis.
- Ensure Quality Control department is diligently verifying quality of enhanced seed.
- Oversee warehouse staff members’ duties and responsibilities.
- Perform all other duties needed to help drive our vision, fulfill our mission, and abide by our organization’s values.
- Adhere to all quality control measures and watch for signs of tampering and contamination.
- Participate in continuous improvement exercises and adapt to changing needs and requirements.
- Perform tasks to ensure consistent Quality Control and testing protocols while maintaining deadlines.
Requirements
- Associate degree or higher preferred, High School diploma/GED considered with experience
- 1 or more years of experience working in a supervisory role preferred; work with seed, testing or in a greenhouse preferred
- Basic math and computer skills, ability to enter and maintain records in computer system
- Excellent verbal and written skills to communicate with internal customers, bilingual capabilities a plus
- MS Office experience preferred
- Leadership skills, problem solving, attention to detail, organizational skills, teamwork, adaptability, and flexibility to perform multiple tasks
- Productive, high-quality output to meet customer expectations and internal metrics
- Adapting approach and demeanor in real time to match the shifting demands of different situations
- Work directly with other employees inside and outside the department on shared objectives
Pay Range: $24-$27 per hour
Hours: 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to Lift/Carry 40 Lbs. 10% of day
- Ability to Push/Pull 50 Lbs. 10% of day
- Ability to Sit/Stand 50% of day
- Ability to Kneel/Bend 20% of day
- Ability to Reach above shoulder level 15% of day
- Ability to Climb/Balance 10% of day
- Ability to use Hands/Fingers 100% of day
