Job Title:   Nature Center Program Instructor   

FLSA Classification: Part-time, non-exempt

Employee Benefit Status: 

Department:  Recreation - Nature

Immediate Supervisor:  Recreation Supervisor


Position Focus:

The Nature Instructor is directly responsible for the planning and organizing all aspects of the Nature Center School Outreach Education Program, Scout Programs, Birthday Parties, and other miscellaneous nature programs. The Nature Instructor will report directly to the Recreation Supervisor. The position of Nature Instructor is a Level 2, part time position. The Nature Instructor is responsible to teach each class. 


Qualifications:

Applicant must be 21 years or older. Requires basic knowledge and skill in the natural sciences or environmental education. Must be a self-starter and perform job with little supervision. Have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and able to follow written and oral directions. Applicant must be able to handle any questions that arise with the public or be able to properly direct them for answers. Must be honest, have a neat professional appearance, and a courteous manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Work independently and efficiently.
  2. Responsible for all non-district 10 Nature School Outreach Programs, Scout Programs, Birthday Parties, and other miscellaneous nature programs.
  3. Responsible for setting up supplies needed to teach the Nature School Outreach Programs, Scout Programs, Birthday Parties, and other miscellaneous nature programs.
  4. Implement any pre-written lesson plans.
  5. Research, develop and implement a curriculum / lesson plan that is both age appropriate and challenging for students. 
  6. Provide participants with the appropriate leadership during the program.
  7. Maintain a safe environment for participants. 
  8. Submit all written correspondence to the Recreation Supervisor for approval prior to  distribution.
  9. Clean up after the program, including throwing out garbage, sweeping the floor and washing down tables. Make sure any supplies are put away.
  10.  Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the District’s safety program.
  11. Maintain a positive attitude toward co-workers Supervisor, and all Park District personnel.

Marginal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Report all complaints or problems or positive comments to the Recreation Supervisor.
  2. Responsible for all activity and room preparations and breakdown for the program.
  3. Request supplies for the program from the Recreation Supervisor.
  4. After a purchase has been approved, receipts must be turned in immediately to the Recreation Supervisor. Receipts with tax on them will not be accepted.

Required Knowledge:

The Nature Center Instructor must resolve differences and problems that arise with students and organizations. The worker may also have to work under stressful situations when first aid or CPR is required


Required Competencies:

  1. Read, understand and follow Park District safety policy.
  2. Use and enforce proper safety equipment and procedures to protect against personal injury or damage.
  3. Report all incidents, accidents, and injuries promptly.

Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions:

Prolonged standing could affect some individuals’ blood pressure. The Nature Instructor may need to respond quickly and accurately. Light lifting up to 45 pounds. May be exposed to all weather conditions. May be required to work in various temperatures within the facility
