The Facilities Worker/Carpentry Specialist is responsible for day-to-day cleaning and general maintenance of various interior and exterior spaces on The Rivers School campus, with a specific focus on completing minor and medium-sized carpentry projects. The Specialist collaborates closely daily with a team of other facilities management professionals to process events in addition to helping to provide a safe, functional, and clean learning environment for students. This position is non-exempt, full-tim (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday) and reports directly to the Director of Facilities.
Essential Job Functions
The Facilities Worker/Carpentry Specialist is expected to perform all essential functions of a Facilities Worker as well as the following specialized carpentry and repair duties:
- Minor to Medium Carpentry Projects: Execute repair, maintenance, and construction tasks, including but not limited to, the repair and installation of shelving, cabinets, trim, moulding, doors, window frames, and hardware.
- Surface and Structure Repair: Repair or replace damaged wallboard, flooring, ceiling tiles, and wooden structures such as outdoor benches or decking.
- Painting and Finishing: Prepare surfaces and apply paint, stain, varnish, or other finishes to woodwork and repaired areas to ensure a professional finish.
- Estimate and Plan: Assist in estimating materials and time required for various carpentry and maintenance projects.
- General Facilities Maintenance:
- Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms using established practices and procedure.
- Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; replace light bulbs; refill restroom dispensers.
- Clean and sanitize locker rooms.
- Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc. by moving furniture and equipment.
- Vacuum and spot clean carpets.
- Use ladders when required in work assignments.
- Lock and unlock assigned buildings, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights.
- Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Use as directed.
- Wash accessible interior and exterior windows.
- Attend to emergencies when necessary.
- Handle recycling materials.
- Process work orders.
- Performs preventative maintenance in and around facilities.
- Perform cleaning and related activities such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks, stairs, and all other campus areas.
- Perform deep cleaning and light maintenance on all fitness equipment.
- Direct traffic and park vehicles.
- Snow removal as directed.
- Serve as facilities contact person while on duty and provide appropriate assistance to rental groups as needed.
- Overtime required as necessary.
- Ability to keep open lines of communication with Director of Facilities and other Facilities Department members throughout the shift.
- Perform related duties as required.
Equipment Used
In order to complete the essential job functions, the Facilities Worker/Carpentry Specialist must be proficient using basic cleaning and maintenance equipment in addition to standard carpentry tools:
- Carpentry and Woodworking Tools: Table saw, miter saw, circular saw, reciprocating saw, router, jointer, power drills, nail guns (pneumatic and electric), hand saws, chisels, planes, levels, and various clamps.
- Basic sanitizing and cleaning equipment.
- Brooms/Mops/Shovels/rakes and other hand tools.
- Paint brushes, rollers and other painting equipment.
- Snow blower.
- All-Terrain Utility Vehicles.
- Full-Sized Pickup Trucks.
- Step and extension ladders.
- Genie Lift.
- String Trimmers/Mowers/Leaf blowers.
- Furniture dollies/pallet jacks.
- Misc. power tools.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience: High School or equivalent diploma preferred. Previous working experience in a custodial role preferred. Two (2) or more years of professional experience in general carpentry or a related trade is required. Must have and maintain a current Massachusetts driver’s license.
