Position Overview

The Mood, Anxiety, & Transdiagnostic Treatments Lab is seeking a highly motivated candidate for appointment as a full-time research technician to assist with various research activities.

Led by Matt Southward, Ph.D., the goals of mattlab are to characterize mechanisms of change in treatments for mood, anxiety, and personality disorders. The lab's current research topics include:
1.    Testing if it is more efficacious to teach people with emotion dysregulation a wide range of emotion regulation skills or a specific emotion regulation strength in depth.
2.    Specifying baseline predictors of success in brief cognitive, behavioral, and mindfulness treatments to identify which skills work best for whom.
3.    Piloting cognitive-behavioral modules for neuroticism, antagonism, and disinhibition among people with borderline personality disorder.

The lab uses various tools (e.g., ecological momentary assessment, behavioral tasks, self-report measures) and study design (e.g., treatment studies, intensive longitudinal data collection, experimental analogue studies) to provide multi-method validation of our results. Opportunities to conduct studies in and collaborate with the Ohio State University Department of Psychology’s in-house training clinic, the Psychological Services Center, are available. We will also continue established collaborations with colleagues at the University of Kentucky on relevant projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research activities: Submitting Institutional Review Board (IRB) proposals and revisions; coordinating participant recruitment; assisting with data collection; administering diagnostic assessments; preparing data for analysis; reviewing journal articles on emotion regulation and borderline personality disorder; contributing to scientific abstracts, research presentations, publications, and grant proposals.

  • Administrative duties: Managing the lab manual; onboarding and overseeing undergraduate research assistants; scheduling lab meetings and taking minutes; purchasing lab equipment; printing research posters; submitting travel requests and reimbursements; posting updates to the lab website and social media page.

  • Professional development: Attending scientific conferences; auditing courses in psychology and/or statistics; cultivating written and oral communication skills for scientific and lay audiences.

  • Community recruitment and engagement: Building relationships with health centers, local faith communities, businesses, and government organizations; coordinating community presentations, podcast, TV, and radio appearances; printing flyers and handouts; identifying and tracking recruitment sources across Central Ohio.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in psychology, neuroscience, biology, public health, computer science, or a related field of study.

  • Completion of undergraduate-level courses in research methods and statistics.
