This academic role in the Department of Surgery at IUSM will work with and represent 21 faculty members and 11 advanced practice providers covering 7 hospitals in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. In 2025, the division saw over 7,800 new patients and performed over 6,600 surgeries. The division provides a comprehensive range of surgical services, encompassing colon & rectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, bariatric surgery, hernia surgery, and general surgery. In addition, the division is home to a nationally recognized Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery program, known for its excellence in patient outcomes, innovation, and adherence to national quality standards. This breadth of services enables the team to deliver highly specialized, multi-disciplinary care to a diverse broad population. The division also supports advanced surgical training through its Fellowship Council accredited Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgery/Bariatric Surgery fellowship, offering one fellowship position annually. In addition, the division plays a significant role in surgical education, supporting one of the nation’s largest general surgery residency programs by training approximately 58 residents and offering extensive clinical exposure, mentorship, and multidisciplinary learning opportunities across multiple service lines.
The ideal candidate will be a recognized, clinically active academic surgeon with strong leadership skills, a reputation for surgical excellence, and a record of achievement in clinical work, education, research, and administration. This individual will be skilled in collaborative, relationship-oriented leadership and have strong experience bringing together disciplines across academic and clinical environments to drive program growth, impact, and investment – regionally and nationally. The Division Chief must bring a point-of-view on the future of general surgery reflective of the latest opportunities and challenges in academic settings. This individual will be responsible for shaping and creating the division’s future, emphasizing growth, expansion, thoughtful investment, and partnership. They will communicate in a fashion that inspires others. The ideal candidate will be able to create momentum and serve as an agent for change and continuous improvement across patient care, teaching, and research settings.
