The Technology Engineer Sr (Senior Linux Platform Engineer) is a forward looking engineering role responsible for the strategic evolution, standardization, and long term viability of Linux server operating systems at PNC. This is not an operational support or end user troubleshooting position. While a solid foundation in Linux operations is required, success in this role is defined by the ability to evaluate emerging technologies, translate them into enterprise ready solutions, and drive their adoption across the organization.

This role serves as a technical authority and platform owner for Linux operating systems. The engineer defines platform direction, establishes standards, creates roadmaps, pilots new capabilities, and enables provisioning and support teams through strong designs, automation, and documentation. Spending the majority of time on break/fix activities, reactive troubleshooting, or routine end user support does not align with the expectations of this role.

Responsibilities
• Serve as a senior technical owner for Linux server operating systems, with deep expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 and 10. Experience with Ubuntu Pro and Amazon Linux is desirable.
• Define, maintain, and evolve Linux platform standards, including build standards, configuration baselines, hardening guidelines, and lifecycle strategies.
• Create and maintain product roadmaps that align Linux platform capabilities with business, security, and regulatory requirements.
• Research, evaluate, and experiment with emerging Linux related technologies, determining their applicability and value to the enterprise.
• Translate evaluated technologies into tested, documented, and repeatable platform solutions, including proofs of concept and pilot implementations.
• Lead solutions from concept through pilot and into full enterprise adoption, working with provisioning, security, and operations teams as needed.
• Design and maintain server build templates and reference architectures used by downstream provisioning teams.
• Produce clear, high quality documentation, including standards guides, configuration guides, hardening guides, and standard operating procedures, with the intent of enabling scale rather than performing operational execution.
• Ensure the Linux platform remains secure, current, and sustainable over time.
• May participate in an on call rotation and perform occasional after hours change work; however, this role is not intended to be primarily reactive or support focused.

Required Skills and Attributes
• Strong sense of ownership and accountability for the standards, security, currency, and long term viability of Linux server operating systems.
• Demonstrated ability to independently learn new technologies, assess their strengths and weaknesses, and make informed recommendations regarding adoption or rejection.
• Ability to think strategically and contribute to long term platform direction rather than focusing solely on immediate operational issues.
• Exceptional written documentation skills, including the ability to produce roadmaps and technical guides used by provisioning and support teams.
• Self starter with strong time management skills and the ability to work independently to meet objectives and deadlines.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts to a broad audience.

Desired Skills
• Experience operating in a large scale (22,000+ Linux servers), 24/7 enterprise environment.
• Ability to write and maintain Ansible automation.
• Experience deploying Linux servers in Azure or AWS cloud environments.
• Experience identifying and remediating Linux vulnerabilities.
• Working knowledge of Active Directory integration with Linux systems.
• Experience with Red Hat Satellite Server.
• Ability to script in Bash.
• Knowledge of IP networking concepts, firewalls, and proxy infrastructure.
• Red Hat or Ubuntu certifications are preferred but not required.
