Akron General’s 5400 Oncology Unit provides care to cancer patients, trains caregivers to give therapy, and provides hands-on learning to achieve chemotherapy competency. As a Nurse Technician, you will offer basic direct patient care activities under the supervision of an RN. A compassionate, supportive attitude can make all the difference for those receiving treatment. 

 

A caregiver in this position works varying shifts, including rotating weekends and 3 holidays per year. 

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

• Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN, such as checking vital signs and weight, assisting patients with personal care, performing patient transfers/transport, cleaning dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and removing urinary Foley catheter.   

• Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to an RN.   

• Assist with keeping patients’ rooms clean and orderly. 

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

• Nursing student in good standing in an accredited Nursing School Program OR an unlicensed graduate of an accredited Nursing School Program 

• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)

Physical Requirements:

• Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.

• Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force rarely, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force occasionally to move objects.

• Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

• Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
