What You Will Do:
We are currently searching for an Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner to support the mission of the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Intervention (LCI) located within the Division of Intramural Research of the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by providing comprehensive management of cardiovascular disease including assessment, diagnostic evaluation, treatment, education, and follow-up of patients and families and referring physicians at the NIH Clinical Center. As well as managing patients as part of in-lab care team during diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular catheterization and works closely with LCI physicians and staff to coordinate care. This is a part-time, on-site opportunity in Bethesda, MD.  

  • Ensure compliance with institutional and national standards for cardiovascular care.
  • Independently manage pre- and post-procedure concerns include medication management in preparation for invasive diagnosis and therapy, including coordination of moderate procedural sedation, and including post-procedure access-site management.
  • Provide care to acute and /or complex patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings, including as a consultant to the intensive care unit.
  • Organize specialized cardiovascular testing, including urgent testing, as needed within the NIH Clinical Center.
  • Communicate verbally and in the medical record of patient management recommendations of the attending physician.
  • Participate in the multidisciplinary educational conferences of the LCI and the Cardiovascular Branch, including preparing conference presentations, and literature reviews.
  • Review medical imaging examinations (such as echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance) with experts.
  • Manage the interventional catheterization service infrastructure.
  • Serve in a leadership position and is recognized as an expert in a specialty area serving as a role model to other health care professionals both within the institution and outside.
  • Responsible for Point-of-Care testing quality assurance and maintenance and reporting, for testing equipment such as Activated Clotting Time measurement in the LCI laboratory rather than centralized NIH Laboratory Medicine Service.
  • Integrate evidence-based practice into nursing practice and evaluates patient outcomes.
  • Contribute to the identification of learning needs for the practice environment and provides learning opportunities for others.
  • Identify and communicate the impact of the research process on patient care, adjusts interventions based on findings and reports issues/variance promptly to the research team.  
  • Manage ethical conflicts / issues that may arise in a clinical research setting.
  • Participate in protocol document preparation, protocol amendments, protocol monitoring visits, and serves as point of contact for protocol navigators.
  • Support of non-clinical invasive catheterization experiments on large mammals performed in the LCI.
  • Operates in both the X-ray fluoroscopy and real-time MRI environments as required.


What You Will Need:

  • Must possess current and active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • At least 6 years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Contingency that requires Maryland NP license within 90 days of hire


What Would Be Nice To Have:

  • Possesses or acquires knowledge of the biomedical research process, support of patients on biomedical research protocols and awareness of ethical issues.
  • Experience with cardiovascular procedures beneficial.
