Job Description

The Lab Team Lead reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organizations Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. Under general supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor and Director and established guidelines, leads the overall daily operations of laboratory service delivery processes and employees. Is responsible for coordinating and directing activities and subordinates engaged in performing routine and non-routine laboratory testing and phlebotomy. In doing so, ensures that quality and quantity standards are met relating to the delivery of laboratory services, test results, service delivery outcomes, and consistency within the laboratory. - Performs duties of a Medical Lab Tech at the bench in addition to those of supervisor. Oversees and directs work of Laboratory employees to ensure accurate and efficient operation and prompt attention to patient care and budgetary implications. - Coordinates activities to ensure consistency between and within sections of the laboratory including outpatient services and in-sourced testing activities. - Oversees employees to ensure a professional, positive, engaging attitude necessary to welcome customers to Northwestern Medicine and provide accurate, timely, and customer-focused services. - Participates in the selection and performance process of employees, in conjunction with the Laboratory Supervisor. Responsible for monitoring and assessing staff developmental needs to ensure competence, both technical and non-technical. - Orients and trains new employees in equipment use and operation. Works with Director, Supervisor, and Coordinators to develop and implement job specific checklists, skills competencies, and educational and training activities. - Participates in the training and development of effective and efficient staff. Evaluates and counsels departmental personnel in conjunction with the Laboratory Supervisor. - Reviews workflow and processes on the PM and Night shifts to maintain and enhance productivity and turn-around-time. Writes and reviews shift specific procedures/ policies and incorporates into the shift process. - Participates in developing, implementing, and monitoring quality assurance standards in order to ensure problem areas are identified and corrective actions are promptly taken. Actively promotes and involves the team in the process. - Maintains Laboratory equipment to ensure maintenance procedures and quality control meets high reliability of test results. - Responds to inquiries from physicians, nursing and other clinical personnel regarding assays and specimen handling. Assists physicians and other personnel with special procedures. - Provides advice and direction to assigned personnel concerning problems encountered on more complex tests. Explains or demonstrates appropriate techniques. - Assists with review and revision of policies, procedures and protocols for department in conjunction with the Director, Supervisor, and Coordinators. Ensures procedures are carried out in accordance with established standards and Supervisor notified of unexpected outcomes. - Maintains personal professional growth and development through goal setting and keeping current with trends or developments in the field by attending workshops, seminars and professional organization activities. - Ensures required proficiency testing from outside agencies are completed and submitted in a timely manner. - Participates in interdisciplinary committees for process improvement and develops/oversees department specific teams as needed for process improvement. - Creates a culture that supports Northwestern Medi
