A Brief Overview
The General Surgery and Trauma/Acute Care Surgery Night Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is an APRN or PA who provides advanced patient care based on educational preparation and/or certification to a specific patient population following established standards and practices. Care will be provided in the acute care setting, operating room, and trauma bay. This particular position is for overnight hours and encompasses weekends and holidays. There is no call requirement.

The APP assumes the management of patients, functioning in both an independent and collaborative role with the surgeon and other members of the care team. The APP performs select procedures, designs individualized treatment plans, evaluates outcomes, and modifies the treatment plan as needed in accordance with established management protocols and regulating bodies. The APP facilitates the transition of patients between service units and provides/coordinates complex patient and family teaching.

Education Qualifications

• Must be a graduate of an accredited PA/APRN program. Meets educational preparation or other qualifications within specified time frames as determined/outlined by specific department policy.

Experience Qualifications

• Experience with General Surgery or Trauma patient population Preferred
• Experience with suturing, I&D, soft tissue lesion excision. Preferred
• Surgical first assist experience. Preferred

Skills and Abilities

• All APRN incumbents are required to maintain Registered Nurse competencies as designated by Federal and State organizations, and as outlined in SVH policy. (Required proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications

• Registered Nurse - KSBN Must have valid APRN licensure. Be certified as a nurse practitioner by a recognized national certifying body that has established standards for nurse practitioners. Required or
• Physician Assistant (PA) - KSBHA Required
• Basic Life Support - BLS Required within 90 days of hire. BLS RQI, CPR or ACLS certifications may be required in lieu of or in addition to BLS depending on department.
• ATLS Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN), Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN), or Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) and ATLS Coordinator must be obtained within four months of hire.

What you will do

• Work closely with surgeons in providing patient care throughout the hospital (inpatient, operating room, emergency/trauma bay) by performing consultation, evaluation, and provisional management of the patient with general surgery or acute care surgery needs, or traumatic injuries.
• Design and evaluate individualized treatment plans, collaborate with the consulting/ancillary services, and coordinate care including admission, transfers, and discharges. Consult with members of the health care team for emergency problems to expedite resolution/disposition.
• Review and interpret laboratory/radiologic studies and vital signs. Analyze data to identify health/illness problems, the human responses to actual or potential health/illness problems, variations from the norm in diagnosis, emergent problems, and complications. Intervene as appropriate in collaboration with the general surgery, acute care surgery, and trauma service teams.
