We are seeking a Product Owner to drive global Data Governance strategic initiatives. One of the immediate tasks the associate will take on will be driving a metadata management strategy and associated data analysis, tool adoption and process changes. The associate must be self-driven and comfortable navigating new challenges, demonstrate strong organizational skills and an analytical mindset, and understand the Data Governance & Quality discipline. Emphasis will be placed on the ability to engage with business stakeholders, and a deep understanding of the impact that data has on our business processes and outcomes.

Data is critically important to how we conduct business and must be treated as an asset. The Data Governance and Data Quality teams work in tandem with operations and IT to protect the integrity, accuracy, and completeness of Markel’s data. In collaboration with these teams and our business stakeholders, the Data Governance Product Owner will deliver on strategic initiatives that meet the needs of the business. The Product Owner will manage documentation of data requirements, translate them to cost-effective technology solutions and process changes, and manage ongoing maintenance and refinement. This is an exciting opportunity to own the delivery of highly impactful and visible strategic initiatives, and the role will evolve with the evolving needs of the business.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Driving global metadata management strategy from inception to implementation, including:
    • Thought partnership on strategy development, taking a business-first approach
    • Requirements gathering and articulation, maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the metadata needs across functions and divisions
    • Adopting an approach for Metadata management that improves the understanding of data and increases awareness of the quality of data
    • Project scoping and planning to support strategy implementation, including managing competing priorities and change requirements
    • Ensuring tool governance by acting as the authority for the metadata/ data catalogue solution
    • Guiding user adoption of metadata management tool and championing business process improvements for front-end data capture and data accessibility
    • Adhering to Agile processes for metadata tool implementation and driving accountability for established requirements and deadlines
  • Liaise with key stakeholders across business units to get buy-in on, develop, and implement metadata and data management best practices
  • Driving additional strategic projects as they arise (e.g., Master Data Management)
  • Partnering with other Product Owners, as needed, in the execution of the Strategic Data Program to ensure our Data Governance strategy aligns with program objectives  
  • Partnering with Procurement to ensure favorable terms in contracts with vendors

What we’re looking for:

  • Experience: 5-7 years of experience in Data Governance, with metadata management, as a product owner, data & analytics (or insurance systems) delivery, or other business function utilizing all aspects of the insurance life cycle  
  • Familiarity with Data Governance solutions and the needed operational support and processes to drive effective user adoption of tools
  • Demonstrated capability to build effective partnerships with internal clients to drive decisions and gain consensus across groups, seniority levels, and interests
  • Knowledge of insurance and how business needs translate to data and technology needs
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including preparation of executive materials; ability to communicate complex ideas in a simple and logical way
  • Strong ability to break problems and solutioning into component parts and to decipher how each component of the strategy feeds the bigger vision
