Materia is an early stage startup, building AI powered software to help augment a wide range of tasks and improve productivity for professionals at large accounting firms. We are NYC based and have a fun in-person office culture.

Role

As a Machine Learning Engineer and member of the founding team at Materia, you'll play a crucial role in overcoming complex challenges and maximizing the potential of Large Language Models in ways that drive real value for our users. You'll be involved in pioneering projects like developing intelligent search capabilities, constructing knowledge graphs from data automatically, enhancing self-reflection and verification processes, improving error correction, facilitating dynamic context retrieval, robust evaluation methods, and learning autonomously from data.

Being part of an early-stage company, your role isn't just about technical expertise; it's about having a keen eye for creating impactful solutions. You'll be instrumental in developing features that not only advance our product significantly but also captivate our users. Moreover, you'll be responsible for building and deploying scalable production systems, ensuring that our innovations reach our users effectively.

Breakdown: 70% core ML projects, 30% general backend

Impact

• Drive improvements to our AI orchestration and knowledge system

• Work on new projects at the forefront of LLM utilization research, like self-reflection, self building knowledge graphs, agent planning and task decomposition, and more

• Help us build out robust evaluation methods for large and complex AI agent workflows

• As part of a small but growing team, your contributions will directly influence our product development and company trajectory.

• Lead the development of innovative AI-powered accounting tools.

Ideal candidates will have:

• Proven experience leading ML projects end to end that drive real user value in production

• Experience working with embeddings, deep learning libraries, training, evaluation, and deployment frameworks.

• Experience working with LLMs, either from the training side or from the prompting side, with knowledge of things like agents, chain of thought, ReACT paradigm, ect.

• Experience with general backend engineering, building APIs, deploying infrastructure, interacting with databases.

• 4+ years of experience

• A flexible and adaptable mindset. Early stage startups are inherently always evolving! How we handle uncertainty is how we make progress as a company.
