I             Accountability Objectives:

            The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a collaborative member/leader of the care team and is accountable for practicing both the art and science of advanced practice nursing using advanced knowledge and clinical expertise in the areas of Practice, Quality Improvement, Research, Consultation, Education and Leadership, as prescribed by the American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. In addition, the CNS is accountable to practice in accordance with the standards established/endorsed by St Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) leadership and by external regulators and accreditation agencies.  The CNS actively promotes SJMO nursing and the nursing profession, and supports advancing practice in fulfillment of the SJMO Quality Plan for Nursing.  The CNS is an active participant and support to SJMO in all activities related to the achievement of the Magnet Hospital Program Designation. The CNS at SJMO has authority, responsibility and accountability for nursing practice through the formal nursing shared governance structure, and is expected to abide by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.  Key elements of CNS practice include:

• Provision of direct care to individuals, groups, or communities through the diagnosis and treatment of health/illness states, disease management, health promotion, and prevention of illness and risk behaviors.  By virtue of his/her educational preparation, the CNS may accomplish these role functions through the application of pharmacological or non-pharmacological therapies.
• Creating, through mentoring and system changes, environments that empower nurses to develop caring, evidence-based practices for alleviating patient distress, facilitating ethical decision-making, and responding to diversity.

   II            Position Qualifications:

   Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.

Education

• Graduate degree (master's degree at minimum, doctorate preferred) in clinical nursing from a program that is accredited by a national nursing body and prepares graduates to practice as a CNS.

Licensure / Certification

• Current and valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan that includes CNS specialty certification.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. 
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
• Certification by a nationally recognized nursing organization is required.
• Membership in a professional nursing organization is preferred.
• Clinical experience in the last 5 years is preferred.

• Advanced knowledge of continuous quality improvement methods including data collection, analysis and interpretation.
• Ability to use critical thinking, logic and reasoning to identify and present strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to complex situations.
• Ability to assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate patient care for complex and complicated problems using critical thinking skills, and advanced knowledge with emphasis on patient safety and evidence-based  practice
• Excellent customer service and advanced interpersonal skills necessary in order to interact effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.
• Knowledge of principles of adult learning and motivational theory for adults.
• Ability to serve as a teacher, mentor, and coach to patients, students, new nurses, peers, other colleagues, and staff, to advance the profession of nursing and optimize patient outcomes.
• Clinical expertise in a specialty or sub-specialty of nursing practice.
