About the role

Overview

Utah State University Extension invites applications for a Livestock Program Coordinator. This is a 30-hour per week benefited position. This Extension position includes university responsibilities and is based in Juab County. Office space will be provided at the USU Extension office in Nephi, Utah. This position will report to the Director of the Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Department.

Juab County is located in central Utah and borders Utah County to the south. Most of Juab County consists of federal land. There are five major population areas in Juab County including Nephi, Mona, Levan, Eureka, and West Desert. Nephi the largest of those and is the county seat. Juab County continues to grow in population due to the close proximity to larger cities in Utah County. Outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant with Little Sahara sand dunes, Yuba reservoir state park, Topaz Mountain in the west desert, and Mt. Nebo (highest peak on the Wasatch mountain range).

 

The position requires knowledge of Jr. Livestock youth programs (4-H/FFA livestock programs), County Fair livestock shows and sales, livestock production and management, backyard chickens/poultry, and volunteer recruitment and management. We welcome candidates with diverse interests and experience related to these areas.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and support to Extension activities related to the Juab County Jr. Livestock (4-H/FFA) program.
  • Provide leadership and support to Extension activities related to the 4-H Horse program.
  • Develop educational programs for 4-H youth related to livestock (beef, sheep, pigs, goats) and horses.
  • Educational programs could include but not limited to nutrition and feeding, disease management, fitting and showmanship, selection, show ethics, record books.
  • Work with the Juab County Jr. Livestock Committee and volunteers in developing and implementing County livestock shows and sales.
  • Assist at the County Fair.
  • Assist with County Fair and State 4-H/FFA poultry shows. For example, the State 4-H/FFA show held in Bothwell annually.
  • Assist Jr. Livestock volunteers in weighing and tagging show animals for Jr. Livestock shows.
  • Assist 4-H horse program volunteers in planning and implementing 4-H horse shows.
  • Recruit and train 4-H adult volunteers for 4-H livestock clubs and program.
  • Work with adult volunteers in maintain a 4-H livestock judging team and 4-H livestock bowl team.
  • Answer questions that come to the Extension office from the public related to livestock and poultry.
  • Assist with Elementary school Farm Field Days.
  • Develop partnerships and employ innovative approaches to reach clientele and new audiences.
  • Work with county Extension faculty and on-campus specialists in developing educational program development and delivery to clientele.
  • Manage budgets, personnel, and volunteers.
  • Serve diverse audiences and support the civil rights mandate of Utah State University Extension.
  • Serve and collaborate with other Extension and University personnel, community and government agencies, and stakeholders.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned Bachelor’s degree in the areas of animal science, Extension Education, or other closely related agricultural field -or- equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to plan, organize and direct educational programs.
  • Experience in teaching adult and youth audiences.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Ability to act as a liaison between federal, state, university, and county clientele.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with program development and/or delivery related to Jr. Livestock programs.
  • Experience with program development and/or delivery related to 4-H poultry programs.
  • Experience with program development and/or delivery related to 4-H horse programs.
  • Experience with livestock/poultry production and management to the level that questions from the public can be accurately and confidently answered.
  • Skills and experience with recruiting, supervising, and working with volunteers.
  • Skills and experience with low income and under-served audiences.
  • Skills and experience with social media.
  • Skills and experience with related organizations/agencies and fostering positive relationships with community stakeholders.
  • Prior experience with the Land Grant University System.
