Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Supervisor Child Life Specialist (CLS) demonstrates competence in supporting pediatric patients and family members of patients with medical and psychosocial needs. The CLS contributes to the advancement of safe quality child life practices. Child Life Specialists (CLS) are trained healthcare professionals who work with children and their families helping them cope with the challenges of hospitalization, surgery, illness and disability. They focus on the psychosocial development of children under stress while encouraging valuable coping strategies for them and their families as well.

The Supervisor Child Life Clinical provides leadership and direct day-to-day supervision of staff. Responsible for assuring delivery of safe, efficient, cost effective, age specific child life services. Responsible for and deploys unit strategies designed to meet defined unit and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health clinical, financial and quality initiatives and associated performance and outcome targets. The CLS Supervisor would provide oversight of all Child Life Specialists including promotion, development of individuals and program, execution, and evaluation. Serve as the face of the Child Life Specialist team to providers, staff, and patients. Supervise and provide back-up for Child Life Specialist.

Essential Functions:

• Clinical Work: Performs duties similar to the job (Child Life Specialist) it oversees (approximately 60%).

Supervisory Duties: Performs job duties as outlined below (approximately 40%).

  • Human Resource Management: (30%)

In collaboration with Director, assists with the selection of unit child life staff, coordinates unit specific orientation and training, assuring all staff have training to match the needs of the patient population.

• Provides supervision of staff, as assigned; including clinical supervision and developmental coaching.

• Manages staff performance, upholding the rules of conduct and core values through coaching, counseling, goal setting, annual appraisals, and disciplinary action reports in consult with the director.

• Responsible for scheduling unit staff in accordance with master scheduling, collaborating with child life staffing supervisor to ensure sufficient staffing in response to staffing pattern changes, FMLA, vacancies, and holidays.

• Approves/denies time off requests and is responsible for approving bi-weekly time sheets.

• Participates in the development of standards of performance with department and service line leadership.

• Creates a unit work climate which achieves high level employment engagement as measured through department specific metrics.

• Mentor and role models appropriate clinical practice, customer service, team work and problem solving behaviors in an environment that fosters values and the organizations service standards.

• Implements innovative staff recognition programs that acknowledge staff accomplishment at the unit/program level in collaboration with leadership, fostering and maintaining an environment where staff feel valued, appreciated, and recognized.

• Assesses individual and team needs and deploys strategies that foster the succession plan for the team.

• Practices within a shared decision making environment, promoting staff participation on unit/departmental committees.

 • Implements and enforces hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

• In collaboration with Director, establishes clear and consistent role and responsibilities for all child life staff within the assigned unit.
