Job Description:

What’s the role

The primary purpose of this role is to provide professional, timely, cost-effective, and practical legal advice and support to the Shell Trinidad and Tobago Integrated Gas business. The Integrated Gas portfolio includes a variety of complex Shell operated and non-operated ventures and greenfield, expansion and backfill projects. The role reports directly to the Trinidad and Tobago Managing Counsel & Head of Legal.

The primary role of the Legal Services Integrated Gas team is to provide legal advice, support and related services to business units and projects within the Integrated Gas business. Team members may also provide legal advice, support and related services to other business units and projects (including businesses and projects within other parts of Integrated Gas & Upstream, Downstream, Renewables and Acquisition, Divestment & New Business Development projects). The team is expected to provide such advice, support, and related services in a proactive, timely, cost-effective, and professional manner with a view to furthering business objectives in support of the Shell Group Strategy, adding value and protecting shareholder interests.

The Legal Services Integrated Gas team advises on a broad variety of transactional, contentious, regulatory and compliance matters. It seeks to ensure that legal risks are identified, appropriate legal strategies are considered, and documents are appropriately drafted to reflect commercial decisions, always consistent with professional standards, legal obligations, the Shell General Business Principles, and the Shell Control Framework.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Act as lead lawyer, with limited supervision, on complex integrated gas related legal matters/projects and from time to time on other complex legal matters (including those within other parts of Integrated Gas & Upstream). This role is expected to be significantly focused on providing support to the Integrated Gas and Upstream businesses in Trinidad & Tobago

  • Ensure that legal considerations, including mitigation of legal risks identified, are considered in operations, planning activities, contracting, new business/project development, including relations with relevant third parties

  • Ensure optimal use of internal and external legal resources to ensure provision of professional, timely, cost effective and commercial legal advice and support, balancing both risk and value

  • Monitor relevant legal developments and communicate these to the business and functional Directorates

  • Provide strategic advice to the business, including in relation to commercial and political matters, and act as a sounding board for key decisions and policy matters

  • Work with commercial colleagues to develop the legal and commercial structure of the existing business activities and any new business opportunities that arise

  • Engage and collaborate with Shell lawyers globally across the function

  • Engage and collaborate with senior stakeholders across multiple business and organizational lines

  • Create a positive, proactive culture encouraging high performance and collaboration, with a focus on continuous improvement

  • Contribute to the broader Shell Group business, reputational and stakeholder agenda

  • Maximize benefits and minimize risks that could represent any kind of loss to shareholders, while delivering the business objectives

  • Propose strategies and provide legal support that enable safe, efficient, and agile decisions to secure competitive advantages

  • Ensure that legal risks are identified, appropriate alternative structures and strategies are considered, and documents are appropriately drafted to reflect commercial decisions, always consistent with professional standards, legal obligations, the Shell General Business Principles, and the Shell Control Framework

  • The role does not have any direct reports, but the incumbent is expected to coach and mentor more junior lawyers often in different jurisdictions

  • Accountable for protecting Shell’s rights and reputation in all commercial and contractual arrangements

  • Provide advice in connection with, or otherwise participate in, key engagements with regulatory agencies and other stakeholders

  • Protect Shell's interests and enhance Shell's reputation and brand by providing sound legal advice, negotiating, and drafting legal agreements
