The Role
HuffPost is seeking a Senior Editor to oversee the newsroom’s coverage of Family and Relationships. This is a full-time hybrid position, with the expectation of commuting to our New York City office twice a week at minimum.
This is an exciting opportunity to shape two essential areas of HuffPost Life’s coverage:
- HuffPost Family is a new vertical that will explore the real, unfiltered lives of modern-day families in all their glory, beyond traditional views or run-of-the-mill parenting content. Candid advice columns, revealing personal stories and sharp reporting will feature a diverse range of voices to reflect the most compelling topics that matter to readers, whether they’re a single parent, uncle, oldest child, in-law or chosen family.
- HuffPost Relationships digs into the ties that bind (and sometimes break) us, including marriage, friendship, sibling dynamics, dating, sex and so much more. Juicy personal stories and frank reporting will answer readers’ most confidential curiosities and shed light on the topics that they’re dying to read about, even if they’re too embarrassed to talk about them.
The ideal candidate is an experienced editor and a proven thought leader with vision and drive to rethink our coverage. They should be on the pulse of today’s most talked-about topics to provide up-to-date insight, story ideas, inspiration and guidance to beat the competition to the most compelling and timely topics. In order to feature dynamic voices and a range of perspectives, the Senior Editor should have a robust roster of writers at their disposal and an ability to assign stories at a moment’s notice.
Perhaps most importantly, this Senior Editor should be willing and able to push boundaries, shatter stereotypes, approach stories with curiosity, brilliantly package stories and help writers inject voice into their stories where appropriate. It’s essential that the Senior Editor has the acumen to identify the type of content and packaging that can not only draw readers, but also redefine our coverage and effectively convey that story to our sales team. And in addition to owning these two beats, the Senior Editor must also be a team player who contributes overall to general Life coverage.
You Will
- Lead a team of writers and freelance contributors, ensuring high-quality, insightful and relevant content that resonates with our audience and hits deadlines
- Consistently innovate your coverage strategies with the goal of hitting traffic benchmarks, increasing audience growth and strengthening our voice and brand identity
- Stay ahead of trends and maintain a strong sense of curiosity in the worlds of family and relationships, identifying opportunities for impactful storytelling and timely coverage

- Work closely with other sections and departments, such as Audience, Visuals, Sales, etc.
- Embrace data and analytics to guide coverage direction and understand audience engagement; proactively engage the audience team to test theories and alternate packaging, and share those findings with the Life team
- Serve as a newsroom leader; be someone other reporters can turn to for mentorship and guidance on your beat
- Help to lead the team’s larger editorial strategy and deliver on projects that help us meet our audience and business goals as determined by HuffPost editors and management
- Actively and adeptly represent HuffPost at events and in the press as needed
- Approach stories with the sensitivity and compassion that aligns with HuffPost’s values, incorp
