Sarasota County Government is excited to welcome a Housing Inspector to join our Resilient SRQ team, as part of the Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program. This federally funded initiative supports residents recovering from recent storm events, and your work will directly help families repair and rebuild their homes. In this role, In this role, you’ll inspect single-family construction projects, ensure quality workmanship, and keep progress on track through clear communication and documentation. As a Housing Inspector, you’ll also support smooth project delivery by spotting potential roadblocks, recommending solutions, working closely with partners, reviewing estimates, monitoring on-site progress, and ensuring compliance at every stage. This grant-funded, time-limited position is expected to run through December 31, 2028 (pending program needs and funding), and offers full benefits, retirement, and up to 40 hours of work per week. About the Position

In this role, you will be responsible for...

Housing Inspection

  • Inspect single-family construction projects to ensure work meets plans, specifications, and schedules.

  • Notify contractors of any discrepancies or noncompliance found during inspections.

  • Review construction estimates, including materials and labor costs, for accuracy and completeness.

  • Conduct periodic on-site visits to monitor progress and document each stage of construction.

  • Prepare clear reports on findings, progress, materials used, and costs for the Project Manager/Supervisor review.

  • Work with contractors to resolve construction issues and adjust schedules as needed.

Process Improvement

  • Identify potential delays or roadblocks and help develop timely solutions.

  • Partner with Case Managers to evaluate issues and recommend improvements.

  • Understand and apply CDBG-DR grant regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Collaborate with department staff, contractors, community partners, and program applicants.

Special Note: This position is a time-limited role. In this time-limited role, your position may be maintained until December 31, 2028 (subject to continuing program needs and available funding). You will receive benefits and retirement, and can work up to 40 hours/week, but will lack retention rights to your position.

About the Schedule

Work Hours:

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week.

  • Typical Schedule: Monday - Friday, 08:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m. (no weekends!)

As a reminder, all county employees are considered essential and must be prepared to protect and support the community and its citizens. Each employee, without exception, will have a duty assignment and be required to work during a disaster or declared emergency.

About You

To be considered for this role, you must have the following:

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent and 3+ years of experience in construction/maintenance, contract applicable construction trades, or in a field providing technical/supervisory services to construction/maintenance contractors.

  • OR: College or university-level training in an appropriate field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required construction/maintenance experience.

  • Valid Florida driver's license by date of hire.
