Examples of duties
- Clears firebreaks, trails, and motorways by cutting back brush or trees with chainsaws and hand tools, under fire emergency and precautionary conditions; also participates in other preventive measures, such as prescribed burns.
- Assists engine companies in laying hose lines used to suppress wildland fires; patrols areas of controlled fires to discover and extinguish any remaining burning material.
- Provides manual labor in other types of emergencies, such as filling and placing sandbags, or digging canals; demolishes structures after earthquakes; or assists Urban Search and Rescue teams, as necessary.
- Performs various support duties, such as clerical tasks, small equipment repair and maintenance, sewing, moving furniture, assisting with special departmental events, washing helicopters, or other vehicle maintenance duties.
- Drives automotive equipment in the performance of duties.
Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:Graduation from high school, its equivalent, or higher.*
Successful completion of the mandatory department sponsored in-service training program is required prior to final appointment.
LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hiring.**
A valid California Class C Driver License with Firefighter endorsement, tank endorsement, with no air brake or manual transmission restrictions is required within twelve months from the date of completing the training academy.
A valid California Class A or Commercial Class B Driver License with Fire endorsement, tank endorsement, with no air brake or manual transmission restrictions may be required for some positions in this class.
PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class 4 - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.
VISION:
(1) Acuity: At least 20/100 in each eye without correction, correctable to 20/40 in each eye. Successful soft contact lens wearers are not required to meet the uncorrected standard, as long as their corrected vision is 20/40 in each eye.
(2) Color Vision Requirements: Anything worse than moderate hue impairment or monochromatic vision resulting in the inability to use thermal imaging cameras would require restriction.
HEARING:
On audiometric testing, average hearing deficit in the better ear may not be worse than 40 dB at test frequencies of 500, 100
