The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a leading 501(c)(3) environmental health research and advocacy organization. Since 1993, EWG has shined a spotlight on outdated legislation, harmful agricultural practices and industry loopholes that pose a risk to our health and the health of our environment.  Whether it’s on Capitol Hill or in communities across America, we make our voices heard, changing the debate over environmental health and putting the most important people – you and your family – at the center of the conversation. 

EWG is seeking a Senior Strategic Campaign Director to launch a new program with a mission of advancing a healthier, safer, and more sustainable food system. The goal of this work is to expand consumer engagement with EWG’s new food initiative by highlighting both foundational and emerging food and agriculture scientific and policy work, increasing traffic and building a committed audience focused on food system impact. This role will be pivotal in developing and executing impactful communication strategies that translate scientific insights into actionable messaging for diverse audiences, including consumers, policymakers, and advocates. 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Work closely with EWG teams to design and implement a unified messaging framework that integrates scientific findings, consumer education, and advocacy objectives.
  • Develop and execute multi-channel communication strategies that advance EWG’s food and farm program goals.
  • Lead initiatives and campaigns to educate consumers about the connections between farming practices, government subsidies, food production, and their effects on human health and the environment.
  • Create messaging that resonates with diverse audiences, including consumers, policymakers, and other stakeholders, ensuring clarity and consistency across all platforms.
  • Collaborate with science, government affairs, communications, and digital teams to produce compelling, action-oriented content that highlights EWG’s expertise and supports advocacy goals.
  • Produce engaging materials for websites, social media, email campaigns, and other public-facing platforms to effectively reach and activate target audiences.
  • Engage in media outreach to amplify EWG’s voice, secure press coverage, and position EWG as a trusted resource for food and farm-related issues

Qualifications:

  • 10 or more years of professional experience in communications, public relations, or a related role, with a proven track record of developing and implementing successful strategies.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to craft clear, concise, and engaging content.
  • Strong ability to translate complex scientific or technical information into accessible, actionable messaging.
  • Experience in campaign development and public education initiatives 
  • Knowledge of food systems, environmental health, and related issues
