Position Specific Summary
The Senior Engineering Associate position at the City of Tucson Department of Transportation & Mobility assists with traffic signal operations through planning, reviewing and participating in specifications and estimates for new signal and street light installations, assisting consultants in the review and preparation of plans within the Traffic Engineering Division.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Engineering Manager. This position leads and instructs the daily operational work of Engineering personnel.
Duties and Responsibilities
Utilizes complex traffic signal timing, optimization, and modeling software including Synchro, iHandler and Way-Sync to determine appropriate recommendation. Utilizes Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components such as video surveillance equipment, data collection stations, and traffic signal management software. Interfaces with complex traffic signal controller equipment to implement changes in signal timing and operations in the field. Develops and implements traffic signal timing and coordination plans.
Interacts with the public through phone calls and email regarding traffic signal timing, including citizen concerns about timing and public record requests. Assists in the handling of requests for information and the resolution of complaints regarding traffic signal timing and operations. Works closely with the Traffic Engineering Project Managers to plan, review and participate in services and activities.
Maintains databases MaxView, iHandler, Synchro, and Way-Sync with up-to-date changes that re-made to the traffic signal network of the City of Tucson, monitors systems to enhance arterial street traffic safety and efficiency. Creates and submits database reports for leadership.
Orders traffic counts based on internal need and external request. Acquires traffic counts from consultants and Pima Association Government (PAG). Assists with the analysis of traffic counts for traffic warrant studies. Assists with traffic studies and performs traffic signal warrant and level-of-service (LOS) calculations. Assists in the support of day-to-day operation of the City's transportation systems. Provides technical support to other City staff, consultants and developers.
Reviews and audits traffic signal plans, schematics and designs to ensure compliance. Reviews the completed work of Electronic Technicians and Engineering Associates. Assist with assigning task as needed. Makes field observations to monitor traffic conditions
