Agency Description

The First Judicial District of Pennsylvania (“FJD”) is the Philadelphia County Court System and is composed of two courts:  the Court of Common Pleas and the Municipal Court.  The mission of the FJD is to adjudicate cases and provide services to the community within our jurisdiction while ensuring fair, timely, and accessible justice to the people of Philadelphia.  The FJD is part of the Unified Judicial System reporting in to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

Job Description

This is specialized work functioning as a personal aide to a member of the Common Pleas Court judiciary. Important aspects of the job involve assistance to courtroom operations, ensuring dignity is provided in the courtroom and accompanying the appointing judge to all public functions and performing various other duties as assigned. An employee in this class is directly responsible to and serves at the discretion of the appointing judge.

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all- inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Actively participates in courtroom operations; remains in the courtroom at all times while court is in session unless specifically instructed by the appointing judge. Specifically in Philadelphia Municipal Court, fills out the transcripts in divisional and civil courts as required.
  • Assists judicial law clerk in setting up violation of probation and Deferred Hearing matters; files as required court documents with the Clerk of Quarter Sessions, Prothonotary and the appropriate appellate court; ensures that appropriate psychiatric/psychological reports are filed before sentencing.
  • Escorts judge through corridors of courthouse to and from court; ensures doors leading to chambers and robing rooms are locked at all times.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to learn and apply, within a reasonable period of time, the components and functions of criminal and civil courtroom proceedings.
  • Ability to learn non-judicial, civil, criminal trial and Traffic Court procedures, rules and regulations required to facilitate court proceedings.
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions and to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the members of the judiciary, jurors, attorneys, associates, and the general public.

Work-Life
