About the Department/Unit

The Career Center is a bustling office full of opportunity for part-time student employees. Students work alongside nearly 30 full-time staff members and help to deliver career services and resources to thousands of AU students and alumni. Career Center student employees learn valuable career skills and build strong networks. Many go on to land high quality internships, national scholarships, and great full-time jobs after graduation.

Position Summary

The Career Center is seeking a part-time Customer Service Assistant to provide front-line and administrative support for the Career Center office. The Assistant provides excellent customer service to students, alumni, faculty, parents, and employers who contact the Career Center by phone, email, or in-person. The position works as part of a small team to ensure front-facing Career Center operations run smoothly and collaboratively.

Position begins in January, with the possibility of training hours in December (depending on hire’s availability). Must be able to work 15-20 hours per week, during the hours of 10:00am - 4:00pm, Monday through Friday.

Essential Functions

  1. Answer phone calls and emails directed to the Career Center, rerouting when appropriate.
  2. Greet Career Center visitors (students, alumni, faculty, parents, and employers).
  3. Schedule appointments for students and alumni with 11 career advisors.
  4. Perform general administrative office duties (e.g. receiving mail, data entry, research, supply inventory, etc.)

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Part-Time, 15-20 hours per week, worked between 10:00 & 4:00, Monday – Friday.
  • In-person at the Career Center (4400 Massachusetts Avenue NW, 5th floor Butler Pavilion).

Salary Range

  • $17.50 – $18.50/hour  

Educational Requirements

Incoming or current AU student.

Minimum Requirements

  • Availability as described above.
  • Successful experience in a customer-service position (retail, food, and/or in a busy office)
  • Dependability, punctuality, attention to detail, and strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid computer skills in Microsoft programs such as Outlook and Word.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diplomacy, friendliness, cultural competence, and a sense of humor will help the successful Front Desk Assistant interact with the Career Center’s diverse clientele.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
