Job Description
Primary Function of Position
Interaction Design is a crucial role at Intuitive Surgical, with responsibilities that cut across multiple technical disciplines to create products that make customers’ experience of using technically complex medical devices safe, effective, and confidence-inspiring. In this position, the Senior Interaction Designer works to develop new products and features within the Ion product line. The Ion endoluminal robotic system pushes the frontier of human-machine interaction by fusing many technologies into a core product experience –such as 3D modeling, machine learning, sophisticated robotic control systems, and real-time graphical interfaces.
In collaboration with other stakeholders, the Senior Designer will propose solutions and quickly iterate and converge on final designs that are safe and effective and that delight our users. The scope of work can be broad, including on-screen user interfaces, the behavior of physical controls, related processing of anatomical information, and the power of various instruments and accessories.
Essential Job Duties
- Design world-class physical and digital interfaces. Maintain superior design standards and methods, from brainstorming to prototyping and implementation. Ensure a thorough understanding of the problems being solved by working with the clinical, human factors, product management, and engineering teams.
- Participate in user research activities. Work collaboratively with our Human Factors staff to collect detailed information about how users interact with the Ion product through contextual observation, ethnographic studies, and other techniques. Synthesize key insights from research, report them back to the product development team, and incorporate those findings into design conclusions.
- Contribute to the product's visual language. The candidate will collaborate with visual designers to produce beautiful and functional interfaces.
- Contribute to design documentation, risk analysis, and testing. Write thorough user interface specifications that communicate design intent to engineering and can be verified by testing. In collaboration with Human Factors Engineers, review designs for safety risks in light of potential use errors and design mitigations for those risks. Participate in validating product usability through informal and formal testing with representative users.
