Security/Medical Responder

Position Description: 

The Security/Medical Responder will have the sole responsibility to respond to all Independent Living PET (resident personal safety alarms), Pull Cords, and Emergency calls on campus, as well as Security Patrol Officer to ensure the safety & security of all residents, staff and visitors on campus. Must have demonstrated skills to respond to medical emergencies.

Status   Non-Exempt

Job Relationships: Reports to the Security Supervisor and work closely with the Nursing Department.

Duties and Responsibilities:  

  1. Must have current First Aid/CPR/AED certification or obtain certification within the first 3 months of employment and maintain these certifications throughout employment at Arbor Acres.
  2. Responds to all IL emergency and PET/PC calls and determines the status of the call.
  3. If it is determined that it is a real emergency, the Security/Medical Responder will begin the assessment of the resident and determine if 911 is necessary.  They will provide the care that is allowed through their scope of practice training.
  4. The Security/Medical Responder will be responsible for documenting each emergency call in the Electronic Medical Record
  5. Initiation of CPR (with immediate call to Nursing for back-up.)
  6. The Security/Medical Responder will also monitor fire alarms, cameras, and all other emergency codes.
  7. Security/Medical Responder shall make continuous patrols when not engaged in dispatched calls. Patrol duties include but not limited to: Vehicle/Foot patrol; Building check; Equipment check; Traffic/Parking Control
  8. While on patrol, Security/Medical Responder shall look for and report safety/security concerns in the community (buildings, grounds, etc.)
  9. Aid nursing if needed and within scope of practice.
  10. Responding to unlocks, escorts, direct traffic, and other forms of support.
  11. Will monitor traffic flow and speed detection.
  12. Perform light maintenance duties to support residents if working in hours when the maintenance team is not available, including but not limited to: Shutting water off; Helping with TVs and remotes; Changing light bulbs; Plunging sinks/toilets.
  13. Help with snow removal if needed.
  14. Wanderguard door checks. (Alarms when residents with memory loss are outside a safe area.)
  15. Required to train and work in the Welcome Center to allow for breaks or fill shifts.
  16. Arrive to work in uniform and according to protocol.

Typical Physical Demands

  1. Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  2. Must be able to manage exposure to severe weather. Must report to work even in inclement weather.
  3. Must be able to manage considerable amounts of stress and make good decisions under stress (generally for brief/emergency periods of time.)
  4. Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs.
  5. Must be able to operate medical equipment/devices/portable lifts, etc.

Security / Medical Responder:  Key Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Must be able to communicate with residents, family members, staff, and emergency personnel.
  2. Must be flexible with working hours - this position may fill in 24/7 if other security responders are out.
  3. Strong verbal communication skills. The ability to read, write, understand, and speak English.
