Job Summary:  

A Carpenter I installs and repairs structural woodwork such as doors, windows and floors, and basic wooden furnishings following the directions of a skilled carpenter. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive close supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek.

Work is performed in a carpentry shop or at other locations in City buildings where the employee is exposed to such conditions as extremes of temperature, dust, noise, vibrations and hazardous machinery. Work requires moderate physical exertion.

Minimum Qualifications:                 

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:  

Education: Have a high school diploma or GED certification from an accredited institution.

AND 

Experience: Have one year of experience in carpentry work.

OR 

Equivalency Notes: N/A.

Licenses, Registrations, and Certificates: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit. PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE OR LEARNER PERMITS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of carpentry terminology, techniques and procedures.

  • Knowledge of materials used in carpentry.

  • Knowledge of safety practices and fire prevention regulations pertaining to the performance of carpentry work.

  • Ability to make accurate measurements.

  • Ability to work from blueprints, plans or sketches.

  • Ability to use common woodworking tools, equipment and machinery such as wood chisels, planes, wood bits, hand and power saws.

  • Ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on carpentry tools, equipment and machinery.

Background Check                                        

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointments to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed. 

Probation 

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month probation.

Eligibility 

Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.                                                 

Education Accreditation 

Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
