Since this is a major mission, we needed a major partner. Our INBRAIN subsidiary INNERVIA has an ongoing 4 year collaboration with Merck KGaA to decode and modulate the Vagus nerve in high resolution and deliver therapies in areas of interest for Merck at the peripheral nervous system level.

As a Human Factors & Usability Engineer at INBRAIN you will drive usability across the entire ecosystem of implantable and external components, ensuring our VNS platform is intuitive, safe, and effective for patients, clinicians, and caregivers. You will lead human factors strategy, including user research, interface design, usability testing, and regulatory compliance (IEC 62366, ISO 14971, FDA guidance).

Your profile


Main responsibilities:

  • Conduct research to understand the needs of users, including clinicians and patients, focusing on cognitive and motor challenges (e.g., Parkinson’s disease). Gather insights through interviews, contextual inquiry, and task analysis. 
  • Lead usability testing and evaluation for neuromodulation devices, identifying pain points, safety risks, and opportunities to improve user interfaces, implantation procedures, and patient management workflows. 
  • Ensure compliance with relevant medical device usability standards (IEC 62366, ISO 14971, FDA guidance). Maintain the usability engineering file, including use specifications, task analysis, and risk assessments. 
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, clinical, regulatory, and quality teams to ensure device design integrates user-centered principles and meets all human factors and safety requirements. 
  • Collaborate with surgical and clinical teams to define, map, and document the implantation procedure for a bioelectronic device targeting autonomic pathways. Identify critical workflow steps, ergonomic considerations, and potential risks to ensure safe, efficient delivery. Provide clear documentation to support training and process validation.
  • Partner with software developers, clinicians, and designers to define and document system requirements for applications used in therapy management by both clinicians and patients.
  • Develop and refine prototypes, wireframes, and mockups to validate design concepts through both formative and summative evaluations. Drive iterative improvements based on user feedback and usability findings.
  • Contribute to the identification and mitigation of use-related risks, safety issues, and potential hazards through usability testing, user-centered risk analysis (e.g., UMFMEA), and integration with overall risk management processes.


Mandatory Qualifications and Soft skills:

  • Master’s degree in Human Factors Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Design, or related fields. 
  • Fluent in English (both written and spoken) as it is the company language
  • At least 3 years of experience in usability engineering and design for medical devices, focusing on complex systems such as implantable devices or neurostimulation systems. 
  • Proven track record in conducting usability testing and user research for healthcare or medical products.
  • Experience with regulatory standards (e.g., IEC62366, FDA), risk management (ISO14971), and the usability process for medical devices.
  • Proficiency in design and prototyping tools like Sketch, Figma, or Adobe XD.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly document and present usability findings to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong ability to analyze complex challenges and design practical, user-friendly solutions.
