As a Histology Laboratory Assistant on our team, you will perform a variety of laboratory procedures and clerical functions across one or more laboratory areas. In this role you will support Histologists by receiving specimens that arrive overnight and verifying accompanying paperwork. You will work at the front end of the department, interacting with the Operating Room, Outpatient Surgery Center, Endoscopy, and other areas that submit specimens. This position requires strong multitasking skills, including answering and directing phone calls while managing specimen intake.

This is a regular PRN position, with caregivers working shifts varying between 6:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. or 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Perform various laboratory procedures.  

  • Assist with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing, transporting, and storing specimens. 

  • Operate laboratory equipment and performs routine instrument maintenance, trouble shooting and minor repairs. 

  • Perform clerical duties including answering phones, data entry and filing. 

  • Perform Quality Assurance activities.  

  • Maintain adequate stock of supplies; performs inventory management of transporting and distributing supplies. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED 

  • Completion of three months of on-the-job training to learn department laboratory procedures, instrumentation and Cleveland Clinic policies 

  • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision

  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action


Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Histology experience

  • Histology lab assistant background

  • Previous experience in a lab

  • Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology

  • Strong customer service skills

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires manual dexterity and visual acuity when handling specimens and utilizing instrumentation.

  • Ability to safely handle potentially infectious patient specimens, carcinogenic substances, odorous and other hazardous materials to which they may be exposed.

  • Requires frequent sitting or standing.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
