About the role

Forterra is seeking a talented and experienced Embedded Linux System Engineer to join our growing team.
This hybrid role combines expertise in embedded systems development and Linux system administration
to design, develop, and optimize embedded software solutions for our autonomous driving systems while

What you'll do

  • Embedded Systems Development:
    • Configure and maintain embedded systems firmware, including custom Linux distributions and device drivers.
  • Linux System Administration:
    • Develop automated tools using Ansible, Bash, and Python for configuration management and deployment.
    • Compile and customize the Linux kernel to optimize system performance for embedded hardware.
  • Integration Testing and Automation:
    • Develop automated test scripts using Python, Bash, or Ruby to test interactions between Linux system components such as services, network interfaces, and applications.
    • Create comprehensive test scenarios to cover integration points and edge cases within Linux systems.
    • Set up and manage virtualized Linux environments (e.g., Docker, Vagrant) to run integration tests in isolated environments.
    • Integrate automated tests into Continuous Integration (CI) pipelines to ensure consistent testing with every code change.
    • Identify, log, and report defects found during integration testing to the development team.
  • Networking and Troubleshooting:
    • Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and network-related issues using tools like JTAG, gdb, Wireshark, and tcpdump.
    • Configure various network devices, including wireless radios and network switches.
    • Manage secure VPN solutions such as OpenVPN and WireGuard.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with cross-functional teams to define system requirements and specifications.
    • Communicate effectively with engineers, customers, and technicians to address and resolve issues.
    • Provide thorough documentation of work to facilitate continuous process improvement.


Qualifications

  • Solid understanding of embedded systems architecture, microcontrollers, and real-time operating systems (RTOS) such as FreeRTOS or QNX.
  • Proficiency in Linux system administration, including shell scripting, system configuration, networking, and file systems.
  • Experience in debugging and troubleshooting embedded software issues using tools like JTAG, gdb, oscilloscopes, and network analysis tools.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, Bash) for automation and testing purposes.
  • Familiarity with software testing methodologies, including integration testing and test-driven development.
  • Experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment and independently.
  • Experience with network protocols and technologies such as TCP/IP , DNS, DHCP , VLANs, VPNs, and routing protocols.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ARM Cortex-M/R/A processors or similar embedded platforms.
  • Knowledge of sensor technologies used in autonomous vehicles, including cameras, LiDAR, radar, and GPS.
  • Familiarity with safety-critical software development standards (e.g., ISO 26262).
