Overview

The SCED Modelling Lead, Quantitative Analytics will be primarily responsible for developing Cypress Creek’s SCED Modeling capability. This role requires an understanding of the transmission system across various ISO’s. The model/models developed by this individual will support decision making from greenfield development to short term commercial transactions that involve congestion risk. The role covers curtailment analysis, coordination with consultants and internal stakeholders to develop a systematic internal SCED view.

 

Reporting to the VP, Quantitative Analytics, this position will be responsible for developing and executing a strategic roadmap around developing CCR’s internal SCED capability in coordination with impacted teams across the organization (grid analytics, development, revenue management, finance, etc.).  The position will enjoy extensive opportunity to support the company’s growth by helping deliver renewable energy solutions to its customers across the country, interacting with multiple teams across the project life (development to operations).  The position will provide critical analysis to help focus the Company’s effort on understanding congestion, basis analysis, and the identification of risk management/commercial opportunities related to our operating and development fleet.

 

Responsibilities

  • Responsibilities include understanding transmission system in various ISOs and performing necessary analysis to support commercial activities, primarily focused on power flow analysis but not limited to, market simulation, locational marginal price (LMP) analysis, renewable integration studies, and evaluation of the impact of market rule changes on these forecasts and analyses across US Power Markets
  • Develop and implement a strategy in developing SCED analysis as a competitive differentiator for CCR.
  • Design, develop, and implement regulatory scenarios within CCR’s fundamental energy system models for the US Western Interconnect and ERCOT power systems, focusing notably on SPP, MISO and ERCOT, and other pertinent regional markets.
  • Conduct a comprehensive analysis of energy markets and trends within the US, understanding pivotal drivers such as generation (wind, solar, gas-fired, hydro, etc.), transmission, regulatory frameworks, and demand dynamics.
  • Integrate regulatory scenarios into foundational models (PLEXOS, DAYZER, PROMOD, etc.) deriving sophisticated insights.
  • Engage collaboratively with internal divisions, especially the trading, development, and investment analytics, to inform and shape business decisions based on internally developed insights and analyses.
  • Monitor market developments, particularly regulatory changes, that could influence energy pricing within markets with active Cypress Creek projects.
  • Build and maintain datasets, processes, and systems for development of medium term and long-term congestion forecasts.
  • Drive the decision around software selection and the corresponding implementation plan.

Education & Experience Required

  • PhD/Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related analytical domain.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in Power Market Fundamental Analysis, with a preference for those familiar with US RTO/ISO Markets.
  • Experience with load flow studies (PSS/E, TARA, etc.) and experience with using third-party software solutions (PLEXOS, PROMOD, DAYZER, UPLAN, etc.)
  • Comprehensive grasp of optimization theory, linear programming, and Mixed Integer Programming.
  • Demonstrated capability in scenario development and integration within Fundamental Models, particularly considering regulatory modifications.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, complemented by coding and data management skills (Python, SQL, Snowflake)
  • Exceptional analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills, with a proven ability to elucidate complex data.
  • Unafraid to take ownership and initiative in order to be to be effective within a highly motivated, fast-moving team.
  • Experience with ISO/RTO Market Rule making and modelling a plus

 

 

Locations: Preference to be based in a Cypress Office either in Chicago, IL or NYC. Open to East Coast remote DOE.
