User Program Outreach Lead (Hybrid Eligible)

Overview:  

The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks a User Program Outreach Lead. This key role entails leading development and execution of a dynamic outreach strategy aimed at broadening and diversifying our neutron scattering user community. In this role, you will forge connections across academic institutions, researchers and leaders in the community, championing the merits of neutron scattering as a versatile research tool for materials and life sciences. As a bridge to the user community, the Outreach Lead will pinpoint barriers to access and develop strategies to enhance accessibility and diversity. This role presents a unique opportunity to influence and craft a future roadmap that champions diversity and inclusivity within our user community!

 

The NScD operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 2,000 visiting scientists.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

• Develop a vision and strategic plan to broaden and diversify the community of researchers using SNS and HFIR for neutron scattering experiments. This includes encompassing diverse scientific backgrounds, institutions, ethnicities, genders, and career stages.
• Assemble and lead multi-disciplinary teams to develop collaborative programming to attract and engage potential users. This includes workshops, outreach visits, and conference participation, with special focus on underrepresented groups.
• Develop and sustain key relationships with internal and external collaborators. Collaborators include the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD) leadership team, the SNS/HFIR User Group, university partners, and other ORNL divisions.
• Use feedback and data to identify and address barriers in developing and supporting a diverse user pool. Focus areas may include proposal submission, facility access, and experiment logistics.
• Develop and use critical metrics to monitor the success of outreach events and guide future planning and usage of outreach budget.
• Develop workshops, webinars, outreach events, and seminars for our user community, ensuring the full range of scientific topics and technical capabilities are covered and accessible to all users and potential users.
• Create a library of resources (presentations, recordings) from workshops, webinars, and lectures.
• Find opportunities for greater visibility for SNS and HFIR users and staff (awards, society involvement, symposium organization, and media).

Basic Qualifications:

• A master’s degree in a STEM field or related to scientific outreach and communications with at least 7 years of relevant experience.
• Professional experience in a scientific research or university environment with a proven track record of building relationships/collaborations within educational systems and institutions.
• Demonstrated experience leading organizational programs or initiatives.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• A PhD in a STEM field or related to scientific outreach and communications.
• Experience in program and strategy development for user facilities.
• Experience of working with multi-disciplinary research teams.
