The Staff Physical Therapist (Physical Therapist 2) reports to the Clinical Supervisor and provides both direct
and indirect patient care services. The Staff Physical Therapist works primarily with adult and geriatric
patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. The Staff Physical Therapist with specific
pediatric competencies and clinical experience may also work with infants, children and/or adolescents.


Under general direction and upon receipt of licensed approved provider written referrals, the Staff Physical
Therapist plans and administers a full range of physical therapy services for patients with a variety of
physical and cognitive impairments and disabilities. Services include patient evaluations using physical
therapy tests and measurements, the establishment of therapeutic intervention goals and the development of
therapeutic intervention programs, and the implementation of therapeutic intervention plans utilizing physical
therapy interventions, modalities, and procedures. The Staff Physical Therapist demonstrates practice
competence managing patients of varying clinical acuity and complexity. The Staff Physical Therapist may
seek mentoring for novel clinical presentations or areas of specialty practice for which the Staff Physical
Therapist is not experienced or certified.


The Staff Physical Therapist maintains all applicable patient records related to the delivery of patient care
services, is organized in work habits, and demonstrates effective time management skills. While performing
job duties, the Staff Physical Therapist may also supervise Physical Therapy Students and Physical Therapy
Residents, in addition to Physical Therapist Assistants and Rehabilitation Aides. The Staff Physical Therapist
participates in regular professional and clinical development activities, completing 40 hours or more per year.
As a member of the clinical care team, the Staff Physical Therapist also participates in and may lead
compliance, quality, safety, and process improvement initiatives in the department, local care setting, and
organization.

Key Responsibilities

1. Performs physical therapy evaluations on referral by a licensed approved provider
for patients of varying clinical complexity, across levels of acuity.
2. Selects and administers various evidence-based muscle, neurological, gait,
functional and developmental tests to determine a patient’s functional
impairments.
3. Establishes short- and long-term therapeutic goals based on results of the
evaluation and in consultation with the referring provider and caregiver/family.
4. Develops a therapeutic plan of care based on results of the evaluation and
established goals. Makes appropriate changes in therapeutic interventions based
on the patient’s progress and performance.
5. Administers direct patient care utilizing the full range of physical therapy
techniques and methods within scope of practice and level of competence,
appropriate to the patient’s goals and plan of care.
6. Delegates and supervises any part of the patient’s therapeutic intervention which
can be legally and appropriately done by support staff.
7. Completes all aspects of discharge planning as appropriate.
8. Prepares and maintains accurate and timely patient care records as required by
policy and payer requirements, including services rendered, progress notes,
discharge notes, charges for services provided, and third-party payer reports (eg
CCS, Medi-Cal)
9. Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, caregivers/families,
department staff, managers, and other clinical personnel.
