Job Duties:

The Virginia Industries for the Blind is an enterprise division within DBVI. VIB is an accredited affiliate of the National Industries for the Blind, and a manufacturer and distributor of products and services provided under the provisions of the Javits-Wagner-O’Day Act and the Ability One Program.

We are seeking a VIB Production Associate IV Work to meet customer orders by assembling, sewing, cutting, and completing various textile products using industrial sewing and production machines. Works with high level of proficiency to produce textile products. Participates in ISO Quality program by inspecting finished products and repairing or reporting defective products. Works with supervisor/team leader to coordinate production with delivery schedules. Assist in the storage/movement of new materials or finished products as needed.

Other duties and/or special projects as assigned.
Completes duties and/or projects as needed or directed by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:


Knowledge/Experience:


• Proficiency and experience in operating in industrial sewing machines skillfully.
• Proficiency and experience in sewing, textile fabrication, manufacturing or packing work orders for customers.


Skills/Abilities:

 

  • Ability to exercise good hand/foot coordination. 
  • Able to stand 4-6 hours per days with repetitive lifting and bending. 
  • Ability to complete sewing projects independently. 
  • Ability to read tape measures and apply the information during cutting, sewing or lamination of products, good verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to understand production schedules independently for on time shipping. 
  • Able to lift and move up to 40 lbs on a repetitive basis. 
  • Ability to follow directions and work as a team player. 
  • Ability to use a Hand Jack.
  • Ability to read and understand work orders for packing and shipping.
  • Ability to count and do simple mathematic problems for shipping. 
  • Ability to work independently in the safety wear department.

This position is exempt from the Virginia Personnel Act, otherwise known as non-classified. Non-classified positions within the Virginia Industries for the Blind (VIB) are offered a competitive benefits package that includes an annuity-based retirement plan (separate from the Virginia Retirement System), leave, and holiday pay that is paid by VIB, as well as jointly paid benefits such as health and life insurance. Employees additionally may enroll in other employee paid supplemental plans.
