Speech Language Pathologist

Summary of position: To provide direct therapy services to students with language development impairments and social communication deficits, consultation to teachers, parents and other professionals, and diagnostic services. Committed to student-centered, family-focused culturally competent care and strength based treatment.

Education

Required: M.A. in Speech/Language Pathology; C.C.C. (ASHA certification); and DESE licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist

Experience

Required: Experience working with children with mental health, emotional, and learning disabilities      

 Preferred: Experience working within a multidisciplinary team, consultation,

and assessment.

Required: Ability to be flexible and work collaboratively.  Ability to respond to emergency situations quickly and safely.  Ability to work in a stressful and fast paced environment.  Must understand child and adolescent development, and the impact of mental health, emotional, and learning disabilities.  Must understand issues of confidentiality.  Must be receptive to supervision and professional development.

Physical Abilities

Required: Ability to work and stand for extended periods of time.  Job may require bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting.  Job requires energy and stamina.

Essential functions:

1. Provide focused speech and language interventions to language-disabled students in one-to-one or small group settings.
2. Conduct language groups for self-contained classrooms as needed.
3. Consult with teachers on language needs of language-disabled students and on ways of leading language groups.
4. Consult with parents directly and through clinicians on language difficulties of individual students.
5. Provide in-service education to teachers, clinicians and child care workers on language difficulties, diagnostics, and remediation.
6. Conduct annual pre-testing and post-testing in language development for students with language needs identified on their IEP.
7. Screen intake/admission materials to determine the speech and language needs of incoming students.
8. Provide formal and informal language diagnostic assessment as as requested and approved by LEAs and parent(s).  
9. Document client performance; write timely progress notes for Quarterly Progress reports.
10. Organize, monitor and maintain speech/language materials and testing supplies.
11. Write full assessment reports/language profile based on diagnostic results.
12. Attend TEAM meetings, IEP meetings, and Clinical Case Conferences as needed.
13. Supervise speech/language assistants/interns as directed by Principal; support assistant/intern in determining schedule, preparing materials/activities/lessons, monitoring progress of students).
14. Provide additional coverage to the school program as needed.
15. Participate fully in in-service training programs and staff meetings.

Supervision to be received:          Directly responsible to and supervised by Principal or Educational Director

Supervision to be exercised:        Speech and Language Assistants/interns
