Under the direction of Secretary, Ricky D. Dixon, the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) is the 3rd largest state prison system in the country with a budget of 2.1 billion, approximately 100,000 inmates incarcerated and another 115,000 offenders on active community supervision.   The FDC has 142 facilities and more than 20,000 staff members statewide, making it the State’s largest agency. 

This is an internal Lateral opportunity for FDC Correctional Officer Captains and Promotional opportunity for Correctional Officer Lieutenants and Correctional Officer Sergeants who possess basic canine handling experience and meet the minimum qualifications listed below. FDC employees who possess a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Correctional Officer and basic canine handling skills and experience conducting investigations may be considered eligible for this specialized position, contingent upon their satisfaction of all other applicable qualifications and requirements. All experience must be reflected on the application.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This Correctional Officer Captain vacancy is within FDC’s Office of Intelligence Canine Interdiction Unit. The individual selected for this position will maintain a detection canine for the Department on a full-time basis and be expected to conduct searches on and off Department property, staff, visitors, inmates, and physical locations. The incumbent will be expected to organize and execute canine operations, as well as develop intelligence and coordinate interdiction operations designed to prevent the introduction of contraband into FDC facilities.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Development of strategic and tactical intelligence.

Conduct physical searches of inmates, visitors, Departmental staff and property consistent with Florida law, administrative rule, and FDC procedures.

Demonstrate the ability to collect evidence, establish and maintain a chain of custody, and dispose of evidence in accordance with law enforcement practices and FDC procedures.  

Maintenance of their assigned canine to include housing, cleaning, and maintaining overall health of the animal.

Maintain training requirements of their assigned canine.

Maintain canine training records to include the docum
