About the role

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director, Office of Belonging and Inclusion (OBI) the incumbent will provide support and coordination that impacts the success of the Black Resource Center and its culturally diverse students. In collaboration with campus entities, the Assistant Director will lead and coordinate the planning and development of programs designed specifically for students who identify as Black, Pan-African and/or African descent and providing the general campus with the opportunity to increase its awareness of the Black community experience.

The Assistant Director leads innovative efforts to provide an integrated approach to identifying, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and practices directed toward improving Black student outreach and yield, academic success, leadership and professional development, inclusion and retention, and enrichment of the overall Black student experience. Plans, implements, and coordinates social cultural and educational events. Facilitates leadership development and establishes relationships with student organizations.

Incumbent enthusiastically supports the University's strong commitment to the academic success of all of our students, including students of color, students with disabilities, students who are first generation to college, veterans, students, and to offer CSULB students a rich variety of expertise, perspectives, and ways of knowing and learning the quality of campus life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and coordinates programs, services, and activities that enhance student learning, development, and success: Develop and facilitate year-round programs, workshops and activities for students, faculty, and staff that address the needs of the Black community and provide understanding, awareness, and support of identity, social justice and inclusion.
  • Support other initiatives, programs, and operations of OBI: Support campus outreach events that align with the mission of the Office of Belonging and Inclusion and Black Resource Center.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Ability to consistently report to work on time prepared to perform the duties of the position. Experience with social media. Ability to plan, coordinate, and implement special events, programs, and activities highly preferred. Demonstrated strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to initiate and problem solve. Experience making presentations to prospective students and other audiences. Ability to work with diverse populations, specifically the Black population. Experience with working with a diverse group of individuals or groups and in a multicultural university environment. Demonstrated skill in assisting and speaking with persons of various ages, socio-economic, cultural and/or education backgrounds.

General knowledge of CSU/CSULB admissions requirements and procedures; academic offerings; and student support services. Ability to draft and compose correspondence and standard reports. Excellent oral communication skills and effective interpersonal skills required. Incumbent must have experience processing, answering and following-up as needed with office mail, phone calls, email and in-person visitors.

Must be able to respond to complex inquiries from the public, residents, parents, prospective residents, CSULB employees and students. Effective oral and written communication skills to communicate diplomatically and effectively with co-workers, staff and departmental staff. Excellent writing and editing skills (including grammar, sentence construction and vocabulary) to compose and proofread professional level copy of letters, proposals, reports, meeting notes, invitations and announcements. Outstanding grammar, typing, and proofreading skills. Skill in reading Standard English for understanding information (e.g. business correspondence, legal and contract documents and University manuals, policies, procedures and regulations).

Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships & communicate clearly & effectively with vendors, staff, peers, administrators, Campus personnel, clients, state officials, and the public.
