Supervises the execution of the surveying, GIS data and/or Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) work required by the City. Participates in the performance of complex surveying, GIS data and/or CADD activities; plans, assigns and reviews all surveyor and/or CADD projects.

This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Federation of Public Employees and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Federation of Public Employees.

This is a Management Category III position which includes six (6) additional Management Vacation Days and a Vehicle Allowance of $250/month.

Examples of duties

  • Supervises the work of assigned staff; delegates and reviews work assignments; conducts performance evaluations
  • Manage daily workload assignments, technical support for projects, and staff scheduling.
  • Oversees file maintenance of all departmental computerized drafting software and assists other technical/professional personnel in proper utilization of CADD equipment.
  • Support project managers and engineers by preparing technical exhibits, preliminary plans, quantity estimates, and status reports.
  • Oversee production of CAD drawings, GIS maps, field inspection reports, and supporting documentation.
  • Utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications using current software programs 
  • Prepare visualizations, maps, charts, and graphs to support engineering and public works initiatives.
  • Establishes methods of tracking and monitoring productivity; prepares periodic reports on group productivity; devises methods to improve productivity and efficiency
  • Updates and maintains CADD Standards
  • Respond to inquiries from internal staff, contractors, and residents regarding drainage, utilities, and project activities.
  • Develop and deliver training for technical staff on CAD drafting standards, GIS procedures, field inspection techniques, and software usage.
  • Meets with City and other personnel, including engineers and designers to establish scope of work and schedules for completion; attends meetings to discuss survey needs on engineering projects
  • Prepares and submits oral and written reports on survey crew work activities; maintains detailed and accurate records of activities and survey data
  • Assists in monitoring, administering and approving of program work performed by consultants, including project review for compliance with City established procedures
  • Research public records requests as needed
  • Conduct quality control reviews of technician work products for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensure accurate entry and maintenance of data in systems such as GIS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Cityworks.
  • Assist with infrastructure maintenance contract support, including tracking quantities, verifying contractor performance, and preparing procurement documents.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, customer service excellence, and teamwork.

Qualifications

  1. Associate degree in Surveying, Drafting and/or Design or a closely related field
  2. Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible surveying or varied technical work experience involving survey calculations, working with legal descriptions, field notes and plats; 
  3.  Two (2) years of experience as a CADD operator using AutoCAD current versions
  4. One (1) year experience in the use and application of a proprietary brand of COGO (coordinate geometry software); 
  5. Work experience must include at least three (3) years of experience supervising field survey or CADD personnel. 
  6. Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field, may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience or education.
