Job Description

The Lookdev Artist creates shading to ensure that models and textures are combined into hyper-realistic assets, ensuring to meet the high-quality standards of Rodeo FX. They may also be required to create realistic or stylized lighting setups to integrate the asset in shots.

Main responsibilities:

  • Develop looks to ensure assets can be properly lit and are technically correct to help create hyper-realistic passes;
  • Take assets from the texturing department and push surface qualities further in terms of realism;
  • Finalize assets technically and artistically, validating work with turntables and various tech checks;
  • Create lighting setups that become reference shots for sequences;
  • Set up Nuke scripts that will be used by the compositing and lighting department;
  • Set up and maintain a preset shader bank for different surface qualities;
  • Create light rigs to finalize shots which include the assets. These may be matching existing plates through the use of HDRi and reference images, or completely cg for animated projects.
  • Work closely with the CG and Asset Supervisor to find creative and technical solutions and approaches that enhance assets and shots, while meeting project specifications and deadlines;
  • May participate in the development of tools and techniques for the department;
  • Perform quality control on assets before they are submitted for review/approval, ensuring all technical and creative standards are met, and promptly apply notes received;
  • Keep Production and the project team informed of the status of work, issues to be resolved, ramifications of problems encountered and recommend potential solutions;
  • Ensure deadlines are met, advising the project team promptly if delays could be expected.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a similar position, within the VFX industry;
  • Excellent knowledge of Katana software and Nuke;
  • Good knowledge of Arnold; 
  • Excellent sense of prioritization and respect for deadlines.
