Compensation: $155,000-$200,000/year

Team & Position Details: 

As a Senior Proxy Gateway Engineer, you will be reporting to the Director of SaaS Engineering. This role is responsible for end-to-end design, implementation, and operation of our high-throughput proxy gateway services, with primary focus on modernizing our Java-based SMTP gateway. Reporting to the Gateway Engineering Manager, this role owns both the code and infrastructure life cycle—from developing robust Kubernetes microservices to maintaining GitHub Actions pipelines. As our team grows to approximately 5 engineers, you'll contribute to expanding our gateway capabilities across open standards including SMTP, AWS S3, and SQL (via Apache Trino). The ideal candidate balances day-to-day reliability and performance with a forward-looking vision for feature enhancements, security hardening, and operational excellence across all proxy Protocol Enforcement Points (PEPs).

As a Senior Proxy Gateway Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

• Team Collaboration 
• In this role, you will participate in our collaborative engineering environment through code reviews, debugging sessions, and technical discussions about protocols like SMTP, S3 API, SQL, and cryptography implementation. 
• Contribute to our shared engineering wiki and documentation as you gain expertise. 
• As part of a growing team, you'll work in an environment where knowledge sharing is valued, questions are encouraged, and collective expertise is built across our expanding proxy gateway portfolio.
• Strategy & Vision
• Working closely with the Gateway Engineering Manager, you will help define the multi-quarter roadmap for shaping priorities across all proxy gateways, with immediate focus on SMTP modernization and gradual expansion to S3 and SQL proxy capabilities. 
• You will advocate for the adoption of infrastructure-as-code best practices, enhanced observability, and tighter security controls, ensuring that each strategic decision advances customer goals across our suite of proxy gateways.
• Hands-on Contribution 
• You will be a hands-on contributor, architecting and writing services that implement Virtru encryption and delivery logic at scale. 
• While initially focused on Java-based SMTP services, you'll have opportunities to work with multiple protocols and potentially multiple languages. 
• Crafting comprehensive unit and integration tests, containerizing services in Docker, and deploying them to Kubernetes (GCP) with zero-downtime strategies. Partnering with Security and Compliance teams, you will enforce privacy, secure key management, and audit logging across all gateway components.

Skills that will help you thrive in this role: 

• Java (≥ 5 yrs)
• Familiarity with, or desire to learn Go
• Exposure to one or more of the following protocols: SMTP, S3 API, SQL
• Experience with Apache Trino, AWS S3, or similar technologies is a plus
• Exposure to cryptography preferred
