The salary range for this position is $5,526 - $6,847 monthly.

Thurston County Public Works is recruiting for six (6) Senior Maintenance Technicians to join our dynamic, energetic, and innovative Road Operations (5) and Traffic Operations (1) teams. The successful candidate will operate a variety of specialized road maintenance/construction equipment and perform work in maintenance, construction, traffic control, and other Public Works activities.

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Promotes and exercises safe working procedures and practices. Works with the public in a courteous and professional manner, providing information and answering questions. 
  • Assists in on-site work direction. Prepares and maintains daily work logs, inventory files, and billings.
  • Responsible for cleanliness, minor mechanical repairs, and maintenance of assigned equipment. 
  • May act as lead worker to other employees. May train or provide instruction. May check for completion of scheduled work.

In Road Operations:

  • Performs labor associated with maintenance, repair and construction of roadway systems including roadway/shoulder maintenance and construction, drainage, mowing, vegetation control, bridge maintenance/construction, snow/ice removal and control, traffic marking system, traffic control and assistance at the rock pits.
  • Operates all highway construction equipment, such as, but not limited to:
    1. Boom truck
    2. Backhoe/excavator
    3. Slope mower
    4. Asphalt distributor
    5. Belt loader
    6. Belly dump trailer
    7. Grader
    8. Bulldozer
    9. Man lift
    10. Large size wheel loader
    11. Vactor truck
    12. 10 ton roller
    13. Lowboy tractor and trailer
    14. Slope mower 

In Traffic Operations:

  • Provides technical support and assistance to Traffic Engineering through tasks such as traffic counts, pedestrian counts, material collection, speed studies, sight distance studies, or similar activities.
  • Uses desktop computers, portable computers, Geospatial Positions Systems (GPS), asset management software and other devices, equipment and software for asset tracking, maintenance management and inventory.
  • Drives and operates a variety of equipment such as, but not limited to:
    1. 5 yd dump and flat bed
    2. Propane torch
    3. Forklift
    4. Air compressor/jackhammer
    5. Reader board truck & trailer
    6. Chainsaw
    7. Driver/RPM Applicator on button truck
    8. Driver/paint gun on striper truck
    9. Pressure washer
    10. Utility locate detection device
    11. Airless sprayer
    12. Paint grinder
  • In accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as adopted by the State of Washington, State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and County Standards & Policies, fabricates standard street signs, installs and maintains signs, sign components, traffic control signs, road markings, streetlights, school flashers and crosswalk flashers using a variety of equipment. May be assigned to purchasing activities.

Essential Personnel: This position is considered to be an essential worker and may be required to work during non-business hours or closures in order to meet operational requirements and needs, such as clearing roads during a snow and ice event.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Environment – Will perform the majority of duties outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Physical effort is required due to heavy lifting, potentially in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Travel Requirements - Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings or trainings.
  • Customer Interactions - Daily interactions with Thurston County staff and the public.
