Position Title: Executive Director, Discovery Toxicology

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead a department of approximately 40 people, including Ph.D and DVM- Ph.D scientists and research associates (BS or MS training). Ensure effective career development plans in place for all department personnel

  • Lead scientific efforts to provide target and molecular hazard identification and risk assessments for target and program issues identified in discovery research

  • Advance toxicology research efforts, including technology development, as needed to develop screening strategies and/or refined risk assessments for toxicology-related issues

  • Integrate across scientific disciplines of the Pharmaceutical Candidate Optimization (PCO) organization (metabolism, pharmacokinetics, pharmaceutics and bioanalytical) to enable and develop broad-based strategies to advance programs into development.

  • Represent Discovery Toxicology in portfolio strategy and governance meetings with ability to communicate to Discovery and Development leadership on potential liabilities and mitigation strategies

  • Interface and collaborate with the Nonclinical Safety Department (Development) to ensure effective transitions from discovery into development

Skills Required:

  • Strong background in toxicology and related fields with emphasis on basic and applied toxicology research in drug discovery

  • Outstanding problem solving skills, with proven ability to integrate across disciplines and focus on critical path to address issues and identify mitigation strategies

  • Highly effective written and oral communication skills; ability to address technical issues with clarity and precision

  • Strong interpersonal skills to enable an engaged, active research department and commitment to talent development across all levels of the department.

  • Leadership acumen, encompassing demonstrated ability to (1) think strategically to proactively advance new or novel approaches; (2) develop and build effective relationships with staff, peers and senior leaders; (3) make clear decisions and (4) adjust to changing circumstances and embrace new ideas or ways of working.

Education/Experience:

  • Ph.D in Toxicology or DVM, Ph.D in Veterinary Pathology with ≥ 12 years of experience in pharmaceutical research, especially focused on drug discovery activities

  • Experience leading scientific teams that advance research efforts informing discovery of novel drug targets and candidates
