Job Description
Primary Function of Position
The Staff Mechanical Engineer will develop robotic instruments and systems for minimally invasive surgical applications using both analytical and hands-on approaches. The successful candidate will have both the technical depth to resolve complex mechanical, materials and manufacturing design issues and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team to troubleshoot to root cause higher level system issues. They must excel in a high-energy, focused, small-team environment, and have a commitment to high quality prototypes and concepts and a demonstrated record of developing, creating, and innovative engineering solutions. They have a track record of leading multidisciplinary projects through concept, validation, market launch, and scaling phases. This technical leader creates platform-level architectures, guides teams through concept and development, and plays a leading role in solving challenging technical problems.
Essential Job Duties
- Design and develop a range of electromechanical devices used in the field of surgical robotics, such as robotic instruments, accessories, and system platforms, including architecture direction, design and procurement of components, prototype assembly and builds, and design and development of testing and assembly fixtures and methods
- Work in a small, cross-functional team to define and develop technical specifications and requirements for robotic instruments, subsystems, and systems
- Collaborate with other engineering disciplines (software, electrical, clinical, manufacturing) on the design of robotic instruments, subsystems, and systems
- Act as technical mentor to mechanical engineers on multiple projects
- Contribute to and make decisions based on risk assessments, industry standards, and regulatory frameworks
- Perform technical design reviews to solicit feedback on design progress
- Provide engineering support to other related engineering functions to facilitate transfer of designs (e.g., manufacturing, materials, test engineering, and service)
- Create and maintain SolidWorks CAD databases, including assemblies, components, and detailed drawings
- Observe clinical cases and participate in interviews with clinical experts to inform designs and identify user needs
- Document, prepare and review patent submissions
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
- Possess a strong mechanical aptitude and a finely honed intuition for electromechanical design
- Demonstrate consistent design leadership and mentorship within a small team
- Exemplary communication and documentation skills with the ability to clearly present to larger groups and distill complex information.
- Ability to learn rapidly and quickly prototype creative and practical solutions from rough requirements
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills such as FEA, statistical, and experimental design
- Strong understanding of material and component selection criteria as well as design for reliability and manufacturability best practices
- Comfortable with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and transfer
