Position Summary:
The Preoperative Nurse (Preop RN) supports the Vascular, Neuro-Interventional, and Interventional Radiology Unit at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital by preparing patients for advanced image-guided procedures. This RN performs thorough assessments, provides pre-procedure education, initiates IV therapy, and ensures patient readiness for safe, effective care in a fast-paced procedural environment.
Schedule:
- Work Hours: Monday through Friday
- Unit Hours: 0600–1700
- Call Requirement: One weekend every 7–8 weeks (0730–1500)
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments prior to vascular, neuro-interventional, and interventional radiology procedures.
- Establish IV access, administer preoperative medications, and ensure completion of required labs and documentation.
- Review and verify procedure consents, fasting status, allergies, imaging, and lab results.
- Collaborate with radiologists, technologists, and anesthesia providers to ensure procedural readiness.
- Educate patients and families on the procedure, what to expect, and post-procedure care instructions.
- Document all care accurately in the electronic medical record (EPIC).
- Maintain adherence to infection control, safety, and regulatory guidelines.
- Assist with room turnover, patient transport, and coordination of patient flow.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and staff development efforts.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Active RN license in the state of Virginia
- BLS and ACLS certifications (AHA-approved)
- Minimum 1 year of clinical nursing experience in pre-op, PACU, ICU, or similar setting
Preferred:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Prior experience in interventional radiology or procedural prep environments
- EPIC EMR experience
- Moderate sedation certification
