Position Overview:
The Veterinary Technician Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in providing exceptional patient care and client service. This role is integral to maintaining a smooth hospital workflow, ensuring patient comfort, and assisting with medical treatments and procedures. The assistant may also develop skills in intravenous catheter (IVC) placement and receive specialized training in chemotherapy handling and administration under the supervision of chemotherapy technicians and veterinarians.

Compensation:
  • Up to $22/hr, based on experience
Schedule:
  • Full Time
    • Monday - Thursday
      • 4x10 hour shifts
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist veterinarians and technicians with patient handling, restraint, and medical treatments.
  • Place and maintain intravenous catheters (IVCs) under supervision.
  • Assist in the preparation, labeling, and safe handling of chemotherapy agents following hospital and OSHA safety protocols.
  • Participate in chemotherapy technician training to develop knowledge of cytotoxic drug safety, PPE use, and proper disposal procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain treatment areas, ensuring proper sanitation and organization.
  • Monitor, feed, and walk hospitalized patients; report changes in condition promptly.
  • Support patient admissions, discharges, and transfers within the hospital.
  • Assist with sample collection, diagnostic imaging, and lab work as instructed.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and ensure appropriate documentation of treatments.
  • Restock and inventory medical and chemotherapy supplies as directed.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, including radiation and chemotherapy protocols.
  • Provide compassionate care and emotional support to patients and clients.
  • Actively participate in ongoing education and department training.
Qualifications:
  • High School diploma is required, or related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education / experience.
  • 1-2 years of veterinary experience strongly preferred
  • Proficiency or willingness to train in IVC placement and chemotherapy handling.
  • Strong animal restraint and patient-care skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, communication, and teamwork.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, specialty hospital environment.
  • Must be able to safely lift and restrain animals up to 50 lbs (with assistance as needed).
