Our Organization and Mission: The Office represents the State of Florida in state and federal civil and criminal courts, from trial courts to the Supreme Court of the United States. 

 

Position Summary: This position is in Office of the Attorney General within the Lemon Law Arbitration Division in Tampa, Florida. The Attorney General’s Lemon Law Arbitration Division administers a forum for the resolution of disputes between consumers and manufacturers that arise under Florida’s motor vehicle Lemon Law. 

 

Pay: $81,885.18  Annually

 

Qualifications: 

  • Admission to the Florida Bar and two years of professional experience in the practice of law, legal research, teaching law or in administrative or judicial hearings.
  • The required legal experience must be from the practice of law in a state or territory of the United States.
  • Membership in good standing in another state Bar can substitute for the required admission to the Florida Bar provided that, pursuant to Rule 11-1.10 of the Rules Regulating the Florida Bar, the attorney applies for and obtains admission to the Florida Bar within 12 months of appointment to a position in this class.

 

The Work You Will Do: Attorneys must have knowledge of methods, techniques, and skills necessary for the performance of the job and demonstrate the ability to effectively and efficiently execute all assigned duties and tasks. Quality of work is accurate and thoroughly completed within established time frames and amount of work completed meets or exceeds expectations. Must be able to perform the duties of the position through the competent use of work methodologies, computer applications and software, office equipment, etc.. The duties of this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Serves as legal counsel to the Florida New Motor Vehicle Arbitration Board in assigned area(s).  
  • Includes attending all hearings of assigned board(s), interpreting Florida Statutes and department rules regarding the Florida Lemon Law and related laws, advising board as to admissibility of evidence, procedural matters, etc.
  • Administering caseload in the assigned areas; scheduling hearings, assigning arbitrators to hearing panels, monitoring caseload to assure that statutory time frames are met, issuing subpoenas upon request of parties or the board, preparing all notices, orders and final decisions of the board.
  • Acts as liaison between board arbitrators and the Program. 
  • Including approving compensation logs, travel, travel reimbursements, and other expense reimbursements, etc.
  • Maintains communication with Program Director, Deputy Director, and other board attorneys to provide information regarding cases heard and to contribute toward consistency of board decisions statewide.  
  • Responsible for recruitment and screening of applicants for appointment to the board in assigned areas. 
  • Assists the Program Director and Deputy Director with preparation for and presentation of annual arbitrator training.
  • Assists the Director and Deputy Director in drafting program administrative rules, procedures and forms, as directed.  Makes presentations about the Lemon Law and the arbitration program to the public and industry groups as assigned by the Director.
  • Represents the department and the board in circuit and appellate courts as assigned by the Director.
  • Responsible for supervision and other personnel issues for support staff assigned to the unit.
  • Assists with monitoring any approved RV Mediation/Arbitration Program as assigned by the Deputy Director or Director.
  • Responds to correspondence and telephone inquiries concerning the Florida Lemon Law.
