Principal, Software Engineer

Position Summary...

As a Principal Engineer, Software Engineering (DNS), you will play a key role in building and evolving the systems that power Walmart’s DNS, DHCP, and IP Address Management (DDI) infrastructure. You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams—including network architecture, network engineering, and compute—to implement scalable, resilient, and high-performance DNS services. Your technical contributions will support Walmart’s global footprint, spanning stores, offices, logistics facilities, and our expanding private cloud. In this role, you’ll also help mentor team members and contribute to a culture of engineering excellence.

About Team: Network Engineering and Operations
The Network Engineering and Operations (NEO) team is responsible for the design, engineering, and day-to-day operations of Walmart’s global network and DNS infrastructure. As part of Walmart Global Tech, we work closely with specialized teams focused on wired and wireless networking, data center connectivity, and interconnection architecture. Together, we ensure the performance, reliability, and scalability of the systems that power Walmart’s worldwide operations.

What you'll do...

• Build and Operate DNS Services: Collaborate with engineering teams to develop, deploy, and maintain scalable and resilient DNS infrastructure in alignment with Walmart’s long-term strategy.
• Drive Cross-Team Integration: Partner with platform, network, and compute teams to improve service reliability, observability, and integration across systems and services.
• Contribute to Open Source and Standards: Participate in open-source communities to represent Walmart’s DNS needs and contribute to relevant tools and standards.
• Support Team Excellence: Provide technical input and peer mentorship to help foster a collaborative, high-performing engineering culture.
• Document and Communicate: Clearly document system designs, operational practices, and technical decisions, and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What you'll bring:

• Customer-Focused Mindset: A practical, solution-oriented approach with a strong commitment to delivering reliable, user-centric infrastructure services.
• DNS Proficiency: Solid understanding of DNS and DHCP protocols, standards, and operations, with experience supporting or deploying DNS infrastructure in large-scale or hybrid environments.
• Software, Systems & Automation Skills: Hands-on experience with DNS automation, and a strong foundation in software engineering, systems engineering, scalable infrastructure design, and data-informed problem-solving.
• Collaborative Communication: Clear and effective communicator, comfortable working across teams and contributing to shared goals through documentation, discussion, and technical alignment.
