About the role

About the Company

General Matter enriches uranium.

We are designing, building, and operating the world’s lowest-cost enrichment services, here in the US.

In the process, we are restoring America’s ability to produce nuclear fuel to power AI, advanced manufacturing and critical industries our country relies on to remain competitive.

Fuel drives the cost of advanced reactor electricity production, and enrichment drives the cost of the fuel that advanced reactors consume.  Reliable, low-cost enrichment is the catalyst for the nuclear Renaissance now under way.

Our mission is to make nuclear not only the cleanest and safest source of baseload power, but also the most affordable.  We believe abundant nuclear energy will lead to a post-scarcity society.

We were incubated inside Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and are backed by over a dozen of the world's top venture capital firms.

Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production.

We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency.

Help us build a high-energy society by making the cleanest, safest form of baseload energy the most affordable.

About This Role

As an Electrical Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineering Intern at General Matter, you will support the design, analysis, testing, and implementation of electrical systems, instrumentation, and control systems for a modern uranium enrichment facility. Working alongside experienced engineers, you will contribute to real engineering projects spanning facility power systems, instrumentation, automation, and controls while gaining hands-on experience across the full engineering lifecycle—from concept development and analysis through testing and implementation.

You will collaborate closely with electrical, mechanical, software, manufacturing, chemical, and nuclear engineers to solve challenging technical problems in a fast-paced, highly multidisciplinary environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design, analysis, testing, and evaluation of electrical systems ranging from low-voltage DC circuits to high-voltage three-phase power distribution.
  • Support the development of instrumentation and control systems used throughout General Matter's enrichment facility.
  • Assist with electrical load calculations, power distribution studies, and analysis of onsite power generation systems, including backup power and microgrid architectures.
  • Contribute to electrical system documentation, including schematics, specifications, wiring diagrams, and design packages.
  • Participate in component selection, prototyping, hardware bring-up, debugging, and validation testing.
  • Support development and execution of qualification and acceptance testing for electrical and control systems.
  • Work cross-functionally with engineers across multiple disciplines to ensure systems are safe, reliable, manufacturable, and maintainable.
  • Learn engineering design processes while receiving mentorship from experienced engineers and contributing to meaningful, high-impact projects.

Basic Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals.
  • Coursework or project experience involving electrical power systems, instrumentation and controls, circuit design, embedded systems, control systems, or power electronics
  • Ability to solve technical problems using first-principles thinking and sound engineering fundamentals.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively on multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Eagerness to learn, take ownership, and contribute in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience through internships, research, Formula SAE, robotics, engineering clubs, or personal projects.
  • Experience designing, building, testing, or troubleshooting electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with electrical CAD tools (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, Altium, KiCad, or similar).
  • Experience with PLCs, industrial controls, sensors, data acquisition systems, or instrumentation.
  • Exposure to power distribution, electrical protection systems, or industrial electrical equipment.
  • Familiarity with applicable electrical codes and standards.
  • Experience documenting engineering designs and test results.
  • Comfortable learning new software tools, analysis methods, and engineering concepts
